OUR CLUB HELPS MANY
Yakima Kiwanis in Action/Check out Carl's photos
Check out Karl Corpron's pictures of our activities. http://www.designcentralnw.com/kiwanis
Some of our projects that our club is involved are as follows:
Blue Jeans Basketball Tournament -- this is a tournament that we help fund and also provide volunteers for grades 3 and 4 in the Yakima School District. High school students are hired to coach and instruct. Then we provide score keeping and snack bar at the tournament. Usually this is a 2 or 3 evening tournament in the early Spring. Date to be set for 2007.
MLK Playground Equipment -- This has been a multi year project where we have raised funds and also requested grants and help from our Yakima Kiwanis Trust, to build playground equipment at Martin Luther King elementary school for developmentally handicapped children. The swing set has already been installed and in April the remaining equipment was installed. Our Rock the Gap fund raiser each first weekend of June along with other projects have raised funds for this important service to our community.
Chain Gang -- Kiwanis Club of Yakima furnishes the volunteers for all the Ike and Davis football games for the yard markers (chains). Four people are needed for each game and it is a time of great fun along with helping out the school district.
Camp Roganunda -- this is the longest ongoing service project between a Kiwanis Club and a youth organization. Annually we go to Camp Roganunda (Camp Fire's camp up Chinook Pass)and have a day (at least one)of working and reviving the Camp. We also donate the funds needed for the various work projects. This is done in the Spring before Camp opens for the children.
Special Ed Classroom Santa -- Each Christmas our Club carries on the tradition established by the late Jerry Henderson in bringing Santa to developmentally challenged children. Since Jerry's death Spencer Hatton (Edward the Elf) and Roger Bell (Santa)have carried on the tradition!
Seniors Pioneer Picnic - Each year we provide funds and volunteers to help at the Pioneer Picnic for Senior Citizens. Usually in August.
AKTION CLUB -- we, along with the other Kiwanis Clubs in our area, help sponsor the Aktion Club, a Kiwanis Club for developmentally challenged adults. We provide funds and are in charge two months of the year.
Perry Tech Scholarships -- The Kiwanis Club of Yakima Trust provides approximately 10 scholarships each year to Perry Tech students. Our club helps this process in the selection of the recipients and hosting the luncheon to award the scholarships.
Eisenhower Key Club We provide funds and sponsorship for the Ike Key Club.
