AUGUST 24, 2010

BETH KLINGELE

Next Week’s Program: John Cooper Yakima Valley Visitors and Convention Bureau -- What is happening with tourism and the new addition to the Convention Center.

We were greeted by KARL “ROCK THE GAP DUDE” CORPRON, and CAROL "ROCK THE GAP CHICK" HELMS gave the invocation prayer. CHRIS CHRISTMAN did not call bingo – we missed you Chris! but instead it was called adeptly by new member DENISE GORSKEY.

– With only 3 cards left there was suspense, tension was high, but our own President easily pulled the Jack and won the pot of over $1400! Congratulations to PRESIDENT CHRISTINE COTE winner of the 50/50 drawing.(Perhaps she will now be able to buy some accessories for Squidlipps)

Way ahead of the game is STEVE EMHOFF inviting anyone whose interested to join his committee for the Father Daughter Dance - you don’t have to be a father or a daughter, just be willing to work a little and have fun. The first meeting will be Monday Sept 20th 6pm at JOHN BENSON’s home and will be a New Orleans dinner, which coincidentally is the theme of this years Father Daughter Dance on Saturday January 21st.

Our clubs annual meeting and installation banquet will be the evening of Tuesday September 21st - by now you should have received an E-vite listing all the details. Selah’s is September 13th and Apple Valley’s is September 23rd.

AMY NEAL was our skillfull sergeant of arms asking really hard statistical questions about schools and shopping habits. I think she did her committee proud.

Our program was introduced by DAN MARPLES. Steve Caffrey has been the CEO of the Capitol Theatre for over 25 years. He’s held several positions in other cities throughout the years, however he and his wife, Anne, find Yakima a wonderful place to live as it is very supportive of the arts. In fact, our theater would normally be suited to a 2.5 million surrounding population, instead of the 250,000 population that has been supporting it for years. Steve spoke about the recent addition to our 1920’s era theater. The new space will house much more storage and offloading area as well as a new black box theatre, a more intimate space that will seat up to 400 people. With the better configuration our theatre will now be able to have bigger and more ornate shows than were previously possible. Future plans include an outdoor patio, 4th street pavilion area, renovation of the adjacent Wilson building with the addition of administrative offices and retail (possibly a new Starbucks that serves beer and wine as well as caffeine!) and more. All of this takes money and the non-profit group has recently raised an additional $700,000 towards the next phase of work. Tickets are now on sale for the Best of Broadway series which will include Grease! And also the Broadway on the Edge series that kicks off with the 2nd City Comedy troupe.
