The presentation today was by Lisa Hall and Carrie Brandenburg, a teacher at Garfield Elementary. Both are involved in a program called “Three Squares” which provides weekend food supplies to children who may not be receiving adequate nutrition. The program was piloted in Seattle in 2004. Now, 30 schools in 7 districts participate throughout the state. In Yakima, the schools are Barge Lincoln, MLK, Garfield and Adams. Valley View and Kirkwood schools in Toppenish also participate. The targeted schools have the highest rate of free and reduced lunch eligible students.
Food is provided by Northwest Harvest food bank and placed in backpacks which are sent home with children who have been recommended for the program by their classroom teachers. The food is kid friendly. Teachers note that kids who receive food help have increased attention and attendance. The backpack is filled with breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. The cost to purchase food items is about $5000 per year per school.
Norwest Harvest will accept food items, produce from home gardens as well as cash donations. For more information go to www.northwestharvest.org.
Next week’s program is Steve Caffrey from the Capital Theater.
