AUGUST 3, 2010
Pat Danielson PRESIDENT ELECT PAT ANDREOTTI led our meeting since PRESIDENT CHRIS COTE was on vacation. PAT did a fine job and I guess we will let him be President in October. BOB BROWN welcomed us and then JULIUS GLOVER led us in song. LINDA HACKETT inspired us with her prayer for us and here I am scribing. Linda passed around the invocation list and got a better response. JO MCLAIN then was able to increase the administration budget with her Sargeant dutites. ROGER BELL won the $5 Bingo pot and JAN LYONS let us have one more chance at the 50/50 when she lost with an Ace. (By the way, the Board of Directors voted Thursday that a guest can only win $25 at the 50/50; so what happens to the rest of the money????? Come and find out!)
TERRY ARCHER for the second week introduced the speaker. This time she brought Stacy Kellogg from the Elder Abuse Task Force and local Ombudsman representative for Long-Term Care. She told us that"because dignity and quality of life are a right, not a pirvilege." and that is what the Washington Long-erm Care Ombudsman Program is all about. She subcontacts through the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic and is always looking for volunteers for the Ombudsman program to work in long term care facilities. The program started with Persident Nixon and in 1980 it started with DSHS in our community. It became independent in 1989. The same rules apply for small home care facilities that apply for large care facilities. The territory that she is in charge of is from CleEllum to Grandview and volunteers are the crux of the program. The program is "resident directed" and they can get calls from anyone and then they act upon those calls but they always have the interest of the resident first; most of the time the resident can make their own decisions. It is the job of the Ombudsman to explain to the resident the ramifications of those decisions. The program has a 36 hour certification training and is not taken lightly. They are always looking for volunteers and you can get more information by contacting Stacy at stacyk@yvfwc.org or 509-453-0480.
