JULY 27, 2010
Pat Danielson The news of the day is that there are 6 cards left and Rich Lewis did NOT win the over $1,000 in the 50/50 drawing! Lynn Buchanan assures us that there is a jack in the cards remaining! Penny Baker did win the Bingo pot of $5 though.
President Chis was just a little too happy about announcing her vacation for next week! She may have to pay a big fine when she gets back from fishing in Alaska.
Pat Danielson greeted us; Julius Glover led us in song and Carol Helms prayed for us. Our Sgt. Shannon Bird got most of us with July Trivia which did not include July 4!
Our guest was Calvin Klingele brought to the meeting by his Mom, Beth. He has certainly grown and now is taller than his Mom!
Earl Hall brought prospective member and his replacement Bridget Vidonne at his job that is! No one can replace Earl in Kiwanis!
Terry Archer then introduced our program, Betty Newquist, on Advocating for the Disabilities Community of Yakima County. Betty who is an advocacy and leadership instructor then emphasized to us that we must use the People First Language when communicating. She commended us on our work with the Aktion Club where we put her words into action. Always use the positive first and make sure that we always think outside the box. Most of us have interaction with peoples with disabilities and if not we probably will with aging parents. Some labels that should be used are:
People with disabilities not the handicapped or disabled. She has Down syndrome not she's a Downs kid, a mongoloid; She has a physical disability or she has a mobility impairment Not She's crippled.
Betty had many great examples and we appreciated her program!
Next week is Stacy Kellogg with the Ombudsman Program.
