Christine commented on the Roganunda work day last Saturday. She mentioned the many friendships and memories forged at this camp over the years and hoped that someone will re-open the camp in the future to provide those same great experiences to other generations.

Pat reported on the work day as well. 19 members were there as well as three spouses, Mark Helms, Connie Buchanon and Garen Neal. 82 windows were covered with pre-cut plywood and mattresses and teepees were collected and placed in the dining hall for storage. Mel Light is staying at the camp as caretaker and has done a great job of cleaning up the grounds. Pat thanked everyone who was involved since the early planning meetings. He suggested replacing this project with another similar one supporting one of the other local camps.

Amy commented on the emotional and difficult process of phasing out the Campfire program locally and closing the camp. She expressed gratitude for the involvement of the club with special thanks to Dr. Mike.

Bingo was won by Bob Brown. 50/50 was won and lost by Ron Zirkle.

Presentation by Betsy Bloomfield, Executive Director of the Cowiche Canyon Conservancy. Also attended by Board member, David Severson.

This is the 25th year anniversary of the Conservancy. Betsy outlined the 4 areas of focus of the conservancy.

First is Conservation which includes acquiring additional property and in restoring habitat. The conservancy is actively involved in building of the William O. Douglas trail which will go all the way to Mt. Ranier. They are helping obtain conservation easements on private property along the route of the trail. The recently acquired Snow Creek Mountain Ranch property will be restored over a six year period.

Second is Recreation. The conservancy has a goal to develop a world class park trail system with praking facilities and bathroom facilities. Currently there are 14 miles of established trails available.

Third is Education. The conservancy is a critical resource for teachers. There is a new program in action called “Foster an Acre” which allows classrooms to sponsor an area and help with its maintenance. There is also an active program of volunteer docents who lead hikes, such as the annual “Earth Day Hike” in April.

Fourth is to have the conservancy be an Enduring Institution by identifying funding sources for continued work. Betsy encouraged Kiwanis members to become Conservancy members and support this great resource in our community.
