JUNE 22, 2010
Pat Danielson This must not be my week. This will be my second attempt at the Bulletin since I managed to erase the previous one while I was typing!
Full house, good food, guests and a great program…in other words another Kiwanis Club of Yakima meeting to enjoy! KARL CORPRON greeted us; JULIUS GLOVER led us again in our singing and MAC PORTER led us in our salute to the Flag. CAROL HELMS got us started with a great prayer and PRESIDENT CHRISTINE COTE was on to leading our meeting.
Guests included Sari Bender (PENNY BAKER) and Evelyn Kohler (DON KOHLER). New member , SONDRA PIETE, was welcomed to the club and we thank PENNY and CHRISTINE for bringing her to us. Say hello to her at the next gathering.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
K.L. WOMBACKER needs host families for his Yakima Bears. If you have a spare bedroom, basement or whatever please give him a call for the particulars. PENNY BAKER has years of experience in hosting Bears so give her a call for the real story! She loves it.
PAT ANDREOTTI reminded us of the upcoming last Camp Roganunda work day on July 17. Please come and help or just come and say good bye. We will try to make it a special time for club members.
AKTION CLUB: Remember to try to attend Aktion Club. We almost had an interclub there on Tuesday and maybe we did!
Sgt. AMY NEAL then raised a little money with a “Whats going on in Yakima this summer “ theme. We knew quite a bit! JOHN BENSON then ran the 50/50 and JO MCLAIN was another loser! The pot keeps growing! It has got to be close to the $1,000 mark. CHRIS CHRISTMAN then called Bingo and RON ZIRKLE won the pot.
New member, DOUG DONEGAN, then gave his “classification talk” and told us all about himself. Doug is with Granite Northwest and is the Regional Safety Manager. He is married with two boys, ages 11 and 8. He came to Yakima from Salt Lake City but is originally from Montana. He was in Japan for 5 years and it was a great influence on his life. He loves Yakima! Welcome Doug!
PAT DANIELSON then introduced our program for the day: Lisa Savage, the human resource and communications director for the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic, then told us all we did not know about the organization which was a lot! Lisa has been with the YVFWC for 4 ½ years and moved here from Arizona. The YVFWC served 130,000 people of whom 42% were migrants and seasonal farm workers . Of the people they serve 64% are Hispanic, 32% are caucasion and 70% are below the Federal poverty level. The employ 1600 people and 60% of the staff and providers speak a second language. All employees speak and write in English. They are the 3rd largest private employer in the Yakima area and employ over 1000 people just in our area. They have brought many higher level employees into our Valley.
The Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic has 37 locations, 30 in Washington and 7 in Oregon. Most of the funding comes from Medicaid and the 2nd is from private insurance. YVFWC serves many more people and cover a much larger area than many of us knew. The say they are a culture of caring and now we know a little more about them.
Program next week is Pat Andreotti and Steve Emhoff on the Kiwanis International Convention and the Kiwanis hierarchy.
