Our speakers today were Mark Young and Carol Louden from Memorial Hospice Care. They spoke about a residential Hospice Care facility to be built here in Yakima near Randall Park. It will be called “Cottage in the Meadow”. The facility will have 22,000 square feet with 20 bedrooms, a family room, family kitchen and children’s play area. Family members will be able to spend the night with their loved one. Bedrooms all face the meadow area and have sliding doors that will allow hospital beds to be wheeled outside.
There are 6 other hospice facilities in the State. This one will serve Kittitas, Lower Valley and both Yakima hospitals. A 1 million dollar gift was made to this project by a long time Yakima family. It is a matching donation with 800,000 still to raise by December in order to receive the funds. Businesses are donating money raised from employees. Safeway store is one example.
A video was shown to explain what hospice means and the kind of help provided to families when a loved one is facing their end of life journey. There will be volunteer opportunities at this facility.
Kiwanis members were invited to attend a tree planting event at the building site on June 5th at 9:00 a.m. Bring gardening tools and gloves to help out. Breakfast will be served.
