APRIL 27, 2010
Pat Danielson Clergy Day -- a what a fabulous crowd we had. Our Club hosted the place and Apple Valley Kiwnis was in charge of the annual Clergy Day Celebration -- where all the local Kiwanis Clubs (Kamiakin, West Valley, Selah, Apple Valley and Yakima) honor clergy in Yakima.
Our President Chris along with Vice President Becki Barnett opened the meeting. (We get an interclub credit with Apple Valley). Our greeter was Linda Hackett.
Then Apple Valley led the way with David Helseth, pastor from Englewood Christian Church and a member of the Apple Valley Kiwnanis, welcoming us; Clarke Brown led the Flag salute and God Bless America. Toni McBean did the invocation.
We had wonderful music by Mary Lewis and a Testimonial by Susan Whiman about clergy in her life.
Then our guest speaker, Sister Kathleen Ross, President of Heritage University, took the stage and shared her experiences of how Heritage began. She started with Forthright College out of Spokane and had an outeach program in Toppenish. But it needed to close but the two supporters in Toppenish said no way. Martha and Violet (and I am sorry I did not get their last names) decided to gather a Board of Directors and Sister Kathleen was instructed by her order to get it done. So Heritage University began. The rest is history but little did we know of the stuggles that Kathleen Ross went through personally to challenge herself to get where she is today. She learned to deal with her own fears ( and in the last 30 years she has seen many fears!) but she has learned to overcome them and recognize God in her life.
Our program on Tuesday will be Yakima Greenway Fund a Foot.
