Today’s program was presented by K.L. Wombacher about the Yakima Bears and the Stadium project.
K.L. reported that the team looks more promising this year with 5-6 pitchers returning and some young players with potential. This will be the last year of affiliation with the Diamondbacks.
For two years the owners of the team have been looking at options to improve. They feel that the poor financial status of the Bears is due to having a stadium that doesn’t meet standards. Last summer a feasibility study was done comparing renovation of the present stadium to building a new one. Building new was determined to be the better option. The proposed site is 211 acres of mixed use land and the concept is a year round use stadium with the surrounding area to become a hub of activity including restaurants and shops, an outdoor public market area and access to the Greenway. The entrance to the complex would be from 8th Street near the Convention Center.
Funding is in place. Groundbreaking wwould be in the Spring of 2011 with a projected opening in 2012. This would be the best ballpark facility next to Safeco Field and would allow events such as pro exhibition games, tournaments, a portable ice rink and soccer fields. It may also allow affiliation with the Mariners.
President Christine reminded members that voting of new officers would take place in May.
