PAT ANDREOTTI announced that there would be a planning meeting for Camp Roganunda last Tuesday night at the Sports Center for all who are interested in helping. Our workday will focus on mothballing the camp for the season.
David Helseth, Kiwanian and Campfire Board Member was our speaker. He had the sad duty of reporting that Campfire will be ending it’s charter in July and will be selling it’s building and will be putting Camp Roganunda up for sale. STEVE EMHOFF will be the realtor representing Campfire. There will be a press conference with national representatives from Campfire in attendance next week, but the Campfire Board thought it best that our club hear the news first. Kiwanis has been involved with Camp Roganunda since 1922. The workday is the longest running service project in all of Kiwanis History. David Helseth joined the board as AMY NEAL was leaving as Director. The camp and Campfire has been struggling financially for several years. The focus of youth has changed and candy sales, which were a large part of the funding of the camp, had dwindled. Also sports and specialized camps are more prevalent. Camp Roganunda is not alone; there are other camps for sale and struggling to stay afloat. The straw that broke the camels back was the tree that hit the pool causing $60,000 in damages. $20,000 is still owed to contractors who repaired the pool. Last year our Kiwanis Trust gave $25000 to allow last summer’s camp to be held and our club gave $2000 towards helping keep the camp going. AMY NEAL and the rest of the board have worked tirelessly meeting sometimes weekly to strategize and try to get the funding and/or partnering to keep the organization and camp running. Although it was a painful decision for the Campfire Board, it is the only realistic solution. Although it was a sad meeting, AUDREY RICE and others expressed the sentiment that I think we all feel; we are very thankful and proud to have such dedicated Kiwanians as AMY NEAL and David Helseth and the many others who have been on the Campfire Board and helped the Camp Roganunda workday. It has been a good and worthwhile project.
CHRISTINE’S QUOTE: The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, not to anticipate troubles, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly
