Beth Klingele We were greeted by CAROL HELMS, and prayed with and later fined by JO MCLAIN. CHRIS CHRISTMAN called a rousing game of bingo that was won by our speaker Neil Springer. LYN BUCHANNON then ran the 50/50 which was won, then lost by WENDY AGUILAR. We welcomed prospective members Sally Rodgers and Jean Brown, who were guests of BETH KLINGELE.
KARL CORPRON gave us the Rock the Gap Details Saturday June 5th, Sarg Hubbard Park, good fun and drink, Vicci Martinez Band VIP tables are $450 until March 31, then they go up to $500, so get yours now.
SPENSER HATTON gave us the Songfest update. Over 300 singers, 130 from Toppenish alone! Saturday March 20th at the beautiful Capitol Theatre. A big thanks to Argus Insurance, Dr. Mike Wilson, TheYakima Herald and the Yakima Symphony Orchestra.
Interclub chair BOB BROWN announced that there were nine or so Kiwanians at the West Valley Crab Feed.
GENE ROSTVOLD gave us an update on the WIAA 1A boys and girls basketball tournaments going on in our city. These tournaments are a great economic boost to our city.
Our speakers were Neil Springer and Patrick McCarthy of First Tee an organization that promotes Life Skills and Core Values through the game of golf. Honesty, Integrity, Respect, Confidence, Sportsmanship, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy and Judgment are the core values. First Tee is a youth development organization that is open to all children focusing on minority and underprivileged youth from age 5-18. 400-500 children participate annually. The local group, led by director Del Rankin, starts by introducing the program in the schools as a 4-week PE unit they are currently in 12 schools and then has a busy summer program that costs $50 per person. Many children are on scholarship. It costs the organization $300 per year per child, but many generous sponsors have helped keep the cost to the children low. Summer programs are held at Fisher, Elks, Gardner Park, Sarg Hubbard Park and other locations. First Tee is in need of Volunteer Coaches contact Del Rankin at info@thefirstteeyakima.org to volunteer.
