FEBRUARY 2, 2010

Beth Klingele

February 2 2010
We were greeted by MAC PORTER who graciously stood in for BETH KLINGELE who was busy hosting guest JEAN BROWN. EARL HALL led us in song, ROCKY MARSHALL led the pledge of allegiance and STEVE SOELBERG led the prayer.
AMY NEAL as sergeant shamed us on our failed NEW YEARS Resolutions. CHRIS CHRISTMAN called an entertaining game of bingo which was won by BECKY SCHOLL. LYNN BUCHANNON ran the 50/50 with KIRSTEN DANIELSON winning, yet losing.

Earl Hall passed around a sign up sheet for those that are veterans so that they may be asked to lead the pledge.

GENE ROSTVOLD announced that he and DAN MARPLES are meeting with the other service clubs to work on developing the upper fields at Kiwanis Park. They are working to possibly turn over the project and funds to the service clubs who feel that they can accomplish what needs to be done more economically that the city can.

Mark your calendars for ROCK THE GAP, featuring Vicci Martinez, which will be Saturday June 5, 2010 at Sarg Hubbard Park. Tables of eight are only $450 until the end of the month and then they go up to $500. Individual tickets are $45. Check out all the details at www.rockthegap.com (thanks Kirsten and Daniel Writer from the Yakima Visitors and Convention Bureau for updating our website). Proceeds will go for the Yakima Greenways Fund a Foot program to extend the path to Naches.

Also in the works announced Kirsten Danielson is a fall fun run to benefit the Greenway Fund a Foot Naches Path.

Our speakers were Brian Edskorn and Katrina Cantu from Moss Adams who spoke about tax changes that will affect our 2009 and 2010 tax returns. There are tax incentives for businesses to hire veterans and youth – Work Opportunities Tax Credits of up to $2400. First time homebuyers and new homebuyers are still eligible for credits until April 30, 2010. There are credits available for energy saving changes to your home, including adding heat pumps, energy efficient windows and doors and other items until 12/31/10.
Property taxes are deductible up to $1000 in 2009 even if you don’t itemize. For businesses sec 179 deductions and bonus depreciation are greatly expanded. Contributions to US organizations helping Haitian victims contributed until 3/1/2010 are deductible on 2009 tax returns. The estate tax is repealed as of 1/1/2010, so it may or may not be a good year to kick the bucket. In 2010 there is no high-income limitation for converting traditional IRA’s to Roth IRA’s and the tax can be deferred. Lower tax rates are set to expire at the end of 2010. Our speakers declined to predict what the Obama Administration has in store.

PRESIDENT CHRISTINE’s quote (provided by BOB BROWN)
“To important people we insist on explaining why, to unimportant people we simply tell how…they can tell how we feel about them by the way we talk to them”.
--Chuck Coonradt
