Steven Pickett

Our meeting Tuesday, January 12th was absolutely great although Greeter CAROL HELMS had to announce we had no guests. With the quality of our membership and the great programs we offer we must work on finding prospective members and get them to come to meet us, eat a free lunch and be informed through the great programs our Club offers.
With JULIOUS GLOVER still laid-up with knee replacement surgery BECKY SCHOLL led us in our patriot song. LINDA HACKET brought us an inspirational reading and led us in our invocation.
Several announcements we made:
• KARL CORPRON shared that the entertainment for “Rock the Gap” has been nailed down and Vicky Martinez will be our show case performer. Google her name and you can find sites where she has some of her recordings posted.
• STEVE EMHOFF announced that the “Father – Daughter” dance is coming together nicely. There is room for more ticket sales with approximately 130 sold so far. Steve passed around the group a beautiful diamond necklace that will be given away in a special drawing during the evening. PAT GILMORE’S Dun Bar Jewelers donated the prize and done so at each of our Father-Daughter dance events. Thank you Pat!!
• JO MCLAIN shared that Action Club was holding their Installation Banquet tonight at Englewood Christian Church and tickets are $15.

CHRIS CHRISTMAN called a speedy round of bingo. To make as much time as possible for our program there was no Sergeant at Arms today.
Our program today was led by our very own AMY NEAL, along with her hubby Garon Jones. Amy and Garon were part of team of volunteers who traveled to Vietnam to erect a home under a program ran by Habitat for Humanity, International. They were part of a program called the Jimmy and Roselyn Carter Work Project which brought new homes to 166 families. Each volunteer that went contributed $500 towards the construction costs and had to pay their own way to get to the project. Garon estimated total costs for the volunteers was about $3,000 each.
Amy’s team of 8 volunteers constructed a home for a family who basically lived on their fishing boat because of no other place to stay. Many Vietnamese own land but are so poor that they cannot afford to construct a home. They have no electricity, running water or sanitary facilities. The family had to put a lot of sweat-equity into the home. They were charged with the task of making all of the building blocks that were used to construct their 500 square foot home. The home was built to accommodate indoor plumbing and electricity.
Amy had several great pictures of the building process. While the end product may be viewed as extremely modest by “Western” standards it was a castle to the receiving family.
Amy and Garon should be congratulated for their efforts of giving back some of their time, $$ and talents to such a worthy cause.
Next Tuesday our program will be presented by Dave McFadden, who is Executive Director of New Vision. PAT DANIELSON will be both Scribe and Greeter. KARL KORPRON will lead the Invocation and RUSS ROBERTS will take on the Sergeant at Arms duties.
