Steve Picket

President Christine opened our meeting and asked Julius to lead us in patriotic singing, however, one unnamed Kiwanian (with the initials of SE) decided to recite the Pledge of Allegience. A rather confusing start to a great meeting. This week’s meeting was held at the newly constructed Yakima Valley Technical Skills Center.
We had no guests to announce. This was a missed opportunity for membership prospects to be exposed to a great meeting.
President Christine formally introduced our newest member, Ian Grabenhorst. We look forward to learning more about Ian at our upcoming Classification Talks.
In the way of announcements:
• The Kamiakin Club is having their 50th year anniversary gala event at Howard Johnson’s on December 5th. A social time will start at 5:30 and we are being asked to RSVP Pinkie Paxton if you plan to attend. Tickets are $22.00
• Shannon Byrd announced a need for chain gang participants for our last football game of the season this coming Saturday. With the Fisher family volunteering this need was met.
• Steve Emhoff announced the Governor’s Project this year as being “If You Like Dogs, You’ll Love Kiwanis”. Steve Pickett agreed to chair the Club’s Governor’s Project Committee and is looking for dog lovers to be committee members.
Our Program was an introduction to the staff, students and programs at YVV Tech. This was after a marvelous lunch prepared by Chef Ned and his Culinary Arts students. Billy Smith, Student Services Manager, gave a great presentation on YV Tech. He stated that the facility is on about 1/3 of the proposed campus. As a State funded program there is intense political pressure involved in getting the balance of the facilities built. He stated that the students who complete their chosen vocational program are equipped to be a viable candidate for several occupations in the trade industries. The students for the YV Tech programs come from all over the Valley. Yakima School District students make up about 40% of the enrollment. There are many off-site programs that the administration would like to consolidate into their new location but space is just not available. Those programs include Dental Assisting, Digital Media Entertainment and Technologies, Carpentry and Cosmetology. Medical Sciences/Nursing is the most popular class right now with satellite classes conducted in Sunnyside as well as in Yakima. At the end of the program students were introduced and led the Kiwanians on a very interesting tour of the new facility.
Upcoming programs (back at Howard Johnson’s)
November 24th, Junior Achievement
December 1st, New Member Classification Talks
There are still a couple of spots open for Bell Ringers so contact Phyllis Meyer if you can volunteer.
Remember the Father/Daughter Dance on January 16th. See Steve Emhoff or John Benson for tickets.
