Steven C. Pickett October 20, 2009
President Christine Cody presided over this meeting, which was the third gathering of Kiwanians under her Presidency. Our greeter (with a little help from friends) was Jan Lyons. Visiting our Club today was Pat Lahea and potential member Carol Helms. Linda Hackett stepped in for Steve Soelberg as Invocator and shared some very inspiring words.
Next week our meeting will be off-site. Please join us at Perry Tech which off Washington Avenue, just north of the airport. President Christine committed that parking will not be a problem. Our meeting program will be Tom Gaulky from Entrust Community Services, formerly Provident Horizon Group.
Our Sergeant at Arms for the meeting was Amy Neal. She did a marvelous job of “fleecing the flock” by asking the group several questions which related to our knowledge of Kiwanis history as well as our own Club historical background.
Unfortunately the 7 of Clubs did not win Jon Benson anything in or 50/50 raffle. There is now $207 in the pot and it is steadily growing.
Our program this week was a Presentation on the Aspire Program, which is a program supported by the YMCA and the Rotary Club of Yakima. Tom Oliva, Aspire Coordinator, has been the program for 5 years and he gave a very inspiring message. The Rotary Clubs initially started the program back in 1985 and in 1988 they developed a partnership with the YMCA, which continues today. The program is an effort to match children who need adult “role models” to mentor them and become part of their lives. A promotional video was played and our own Christine Cody was highlighted as one of the mentors. Christine shared about the joy she has received for being a mentor in a young girl’s life. Tom stated that the ultimate goal with their mentoring program is to build long lasting relationships between the child and mentor. There are presently 115 mentors in the program right now. Most of the children are identified either by school counselors or the child’s parent(s). There are 25-35 mentors of children who have incarcerated parents. Tom noted the great support that individuals from the Yakima Herald Republic, Yakima Bears, and Adams and Barge Lincoln Schools has given to the program over the years. There is far more children who need mentors than there are mentors. If you would like to be part of this program please contact Tom at 509-248-1202 for additional information.
Remember………next week we are at Perry Tech.
