AUGUST 4, 2009
Beth Klingele We were artfully greeted by Karl Corpron.
We welcomed guests, Lynn, BERT REDWING’s daughter.
President RON asked for volunteers to help meister our bingo. JOHN BENSON said he’d help out KL, DR. MIKE, President Ron and ROGER BELL. Sign up sheets will be up next month. But BECKY SCHOLL and GENE ROSTVOLD have already “dibs’d” Tuesday.
President RON also asked the club to think about volunteering to be Aktion club advisor as JO MCLAIN has done a wonderful job, it is time for someone else to step up and take on the task.
Karl won then lost the 50/50. Bert won Bingo.
Next week we will be lunching by the pool so dress appropriately.
Our speaker was Jessica Brown who is a public health specialist with the Yakima County Health District. She was joined by CWU intern Brittany Burke. Among her other duties, Jessica coordinates REVITUP a program designed to encourage us to get active. Jessica quoted some alarming obesity statistics including the fact that in Yakima County 60% of us are overweight or obese. Less than 20% of our population gets the recommended five servings a day of fruits and vegetables and very few of our kids get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Obesity has a correlation to high diabetes rates, which is also a problem in Yakima County. REVITUP has been going for about a year and a half. They have done a survey to identify barriers in Yakima to physical activity. Suggestions are to have more bike racks in town and repair our crumbling sidewalks. The program is putting together a website to let people know of the many places in Yakima to get healthy – listings of parks and paths. The group is also helping to create school wellness policies in all of our schools and working with schools on special programs. One teacher in Toppenish worked with a group of five girls who on average lost 50 lbs each. REVITUP hopes to replicate this. The group is also working with local restaurants to identify healthy options on their menus to make it easier for us to choose health options when we dine out. Afterwards, those of us who had a cinnamon roll felt sufficiently guilty and I’m sure we all went for a walk after lunch.
