JULY 21, 2009
Pat Danielson GUEST PRESIDENT, CHRISTINE COTE, welcomed us in PRESIDENT RON'S absence. (He must have been off vacationing -- what else does a retired guy do?) President Chris then had TRESSA SHOCKLEY, our greeter, introduce our guests. DON KOHLER brought his wife Evelyn, BERT REDWING brought her daughter again, and prospective new member Terri Archer also joined us. EARL HALL has moved his membership to our club and has helped our singing tremendously. Thank you, Earl.
A special guest snuck in after the meeting started, JOE KENNISH, former member and President! Welcome Joe and we miss you!
Thanks goes to JULIUS GLOVER who led us in song and to KARL CORPRON who took JAY CARROLL'S absent position as invocator.
JO MCLAIN reminded us that Tuesday, July 28, will be the Aktion Club's installation banquet and we should try to attend at Harmon Center. Dinner is $7.00 for non Aktion Club members.
KL WOMBACHER then called a lively game of Bingo and no one was lucky enough to win the over $500 pot of 50/50.
PENNY BAKER then introduced our program, The Yakima Bears. Pitching Coach Gil Heredia and Pitcher Brian Budrow joined us and kept us entertained with stories and experiences. Brian attended Oregon State Univerity and received two World Series rings while is was there but was disappointed in the amount of pitching he got to do. He then went on to the University of Utah and had much success. This is Gil's first time as a Diamondback coach and he is loving it. He also knew how to impress his boss and our member, KL Wombacher the General Manager of the Bears by saying KL was most impressive! Gil looks forward to developing and teaching and getting the players to the big leagues. He was in the major leagues for 16 years as a Montreal Expo, Texas Ranger and an Oakland Athletic. He said the dream happened for him but it took hard work and determination along with the support of his wife and 3 children.
Brian is a righthanded reliever from Phoenix Arizona. He is learning how to pitch to batters using wooden bats since in college they use metal bats. Professionals use wooden bats.
Penny shared her experiences as a host family for a couple of the Bears and said how much she enjoys it. The organization is always looking for more homes so if you have a basement or unused bedrooms, give KL a call.
Program next week is Janet Krieger - Hearing and Speech Center.
