BETH KLINGELE NEXT WEEK’S PROGRAM: Jim McLain will join us to talk about gardening, specifically growing the perfect tomato. Bring your gardening questions.
We had I’m sure a great greeter, eloquent invocater and fabulous guests, but this scribe was very late to Kiwanis and even though PRESIDENT RON told her who did what, she has now forgotten.
I do know that AMY NEAL did a quick and efficient sergeant and ENRIQUE JEVONS called a game of bingo, that was won by KARL CORPRON who also won, then lost the 50/50.
Our speakers were Jeff Brantner and Bob Clem representing the Yakima Greenway. The Greenway is currently over 3600 acres and includes 10 miles of paved pathway. The Greenway is embarking on a fund raising campaign called Fund A Foot to extend the pathway from 40th Ave. to Naches. This would be an over 10 mile expansion at an estimated cost of $3,000,000. This effort is part of the “rails to trails” program, which turns old railway beds into trails. The Greenway has secured donation of gravel and fill for the sub grade from a forest service road that is being abandoned but this material must be used this summer, so the push is on to get most of the fund raising done this summer. Over one mile from Naches towards Yakima has already been paved and over $600,000 of donations have already come in. The Greenway is asking folks to Fund A Foot for $50. The Greenway is a non-profit organization that us not supported by tax dollars, all funds are raised from individuals, companies and grants. Donations can be made by contacting the Greenway at www.greenway.org/nachesR2T or call Jeff at 453-8280.
Jeff also mentioned several fun programs at the Greenway this summer focusing on getting kids active called “Kiddin’ Around!”. The Greenway has partnered with many groups to bring activities such as photography, martial arts, obstacle courses and other outdoor organized family activities to the Greenway and surrounding areas around Yakima. Check it out on the Greenway website or call for a brochure
