JANUARY 6, 2009
Beth Klingele We were greeted by our longhaired friend, MEL LIGHT, prayed for by RUSS ROBERTS. Our guests were JAN LYONS who has been voted into membership by the Board, and Dale Carpenter from Mercy Theatres was on hand to receive a check for 1000 meals ($250) for the “Feed 5000” program he told us about a couple of weeks ago. We also welcomed long-time member CLARENCE BARNETT who we haven’t seen in a while. Nice to see you Clarence!
A newly retired President RON ZIRKLE presided happily over the meeting and the induction of STACY DRAKE who seems like an old time member. She has already been very involved with the club. Welcome Stacy!.
STEVE EMHOFF is collecting your used Christmas cards for a fundraiser by the new internet based Kiwanis Club. They will recycle the cards, using the front only and sell them to benefit charity.
LYNN BUCHANAN bought the winning 50/50 ticket but did not pull the jack.
AMY NEAL gave us an update on Camp Fire and Camp Roganunda. Amy has joined the board of directors of Camp Fire and is working closely with the board on restructuring the finances of the organization. The pool project was completed but came in over budget and so the camp is struggling to balance its books. Amy gave us the heads up that there will be an article in the Yakima Herald about the organization and it’s challenges very soon.
JO MCLAIN reminded us of the Father Daughter Ball coming up Saturday January 17th. She is asking that donations of silent auction items be turned in ASAP, she is happy to come pick them up. Call her to make arrangements.
Our speakers were from Goodwill. Matthew started the program with the background and organization of Goodwill. Our Yakima and Selah stores are part of a larger regional organization based in Tacoma. The Yakima store has been around since the 1950’s and is one of the nicest around. Goodwill raises funds by selling and recycling clothing and other donated items. The funds are used for job training programs for the disabled and disadvantaged. A new program is ecycle – you can bring your old computers and peripherals to goodwill sites and the components will be recycled. Be sure and delete your personal information first. Kelly spoke about Vocation Unlimited the job training program that helped 57 people last year find work. The program offers training free of charge for employees and the training continues after the employee is placed, free of charge to the employer. Goodwill’s sales are up 9% this year as more people look to find bargains to stretch the dollar in these tough economic times. Check out goodwill.com a site like ebay for unusual and more valuable items.
