Russ Dix BOB BROWN was the meeting’s official greeter and STEVE SOELBERG was an excellent substitute invocator. JULIUS GLOVER led us in song (which sounded better after President RON’s pep-talk). Former member Jon Ison brought two guests, Major Jimes and John Rhyman (not too sure of the spellings).
Jon thanked the club for their support of the 81st Brigade picnic. Our club was made an honorary member of the 81st for helping facilitate the August 19th picnic. Major Jimes and Mr. Rhyman read certificates and thanked us for our help making 550 people feel better about the deployment to Iraq.
JO MCCLAIN passed around a sign up sheet for donation of items for the upcoming Father/Daughter Dance. She has 25 slots and only 11 items so far. Contact her with items you might want to donate.
STEVE EMHOFF also passed a sign up sheet, for the December 16th 23rd Annual Kiwanis Christmas Party. Members and guests are expected to eat for free, starting at 6:00 (doors open at 5:30). There will be gifts for children 12 & under and fun for all. The festivities are expected to conclude by 7:30. Let Steve or KIRSTEN DANIELSON know if you wish to attend.
Certificates of appreciation were distributed to those who worked the Chain Gang this past high school football season.
GENE ROSTVOLD was the day’s substitute Sergeant with a round of Thanksgiving Trivia, straight from the Yakima Herald-Republic. There as no 50/50 Raffle due to the lack of tickets. CHRIS CRISTMAN called the day’s game of bingo, won by Steve Emhoff in just 11 numbers.
JOHN WARREN then introduced Salvation Army speaker, Major Tom Morrow. Major Morrow spent considerable time thanking us for our support of Bell Ringing, since 1951 according to Steve and DR. MIKE, and telling us what a tremendous community in which we live. Tom was born in Portland and spent the previous 8 years on Tacoma. This will be his second Thanksgiving in Yakima, so he considers himself a veteran. He spoke of other Salvation Army programs; the Kids Camp, the Food Bank (which will be serving over 1,000 families on December 22-24th), Operation Harvest (which help replenish five area food banks, holiday nursing home visits (planned to reach over 1,000 residents this year), and Project 300 (a Kiwanis coordinated program). The focus of the day was clearly Bell Ringing with which Major Morrow hopes to raise $93,000 this season. Before the many members dispersed to our four locations for the day, we were given a heartfelt thanks from the Major on behalf of the many we help through Bell Ringing.
