SEPTEMBER 16, 2008
Russ Dix New Member PHYLLIS MEYER was the day’s greeter, assisted by PAT DANIELSON. Phyllis allowed KAREN HALE to introduce her guest, Mila Miller, and BRIAN BLOUNT to introduce his son Kevin (who will once again be helping with Bingo setup & take down). JULIUS GLOVER did his usual great job leading us in song and JAY CARROLL did some unusual invocating (singling out this humble scribe's legs for special blessing).
Announcements:
Julius passed around a sign up sheet for greeters during the first three months of the new administration.
LINDA HACKETT requested volunteer drivers to take members home after next week’s Aktion Club. Drivers need to be at the meeting around 7:45, unless they want to come early and catch Linda’s program.
KARL CORPRON modeled the latest in Kiwanis wear, complete with the new Kiwanis Club of Yakima logo. The logo is available at Designs LTD, 5th & Yakima Avenues, and can be embroidered on a shirt of your own or one you purchase through them. I believe the cost is $8.50 for the logo.
ROGER BELL reminded us to sign up for Bingo, which is less than two weeks away. He also passed around sign up sheets for Installation Interclubs and a sheet on behalf of STEVE EMHOFF for our own Installation Dinner, free to members and one guest, coming up October 7th.
DON DAVIDSON gave a quick rundown of those who hold the longest membership in Kiwanis, though not necessarily in our club. GENE SHIELDS has been a Kiwanis member the longest, since 1948. He is followed closely by CLARENCE BARNETT, 1949; DELMAR PEARSON, 1951; CLIFF KNOBEL, 1955; and LYNN BUCHANAN and Don Davidson, 1959.
Sergeant Jay Carroll did a fine job, even though he was unaware he was to be sergeant until it was announced. RUSS ROBERTS called Bingo, won by new member SCOTT LALLY. The 50/50 Raffle, managed by Lynn Buchanan, was won by GENE ROSTVOLD. He did not, however, draw the elusive Jack, thereby allowed the $673.50 total to grow more next week.
Classification Speeches:
Phyllis Meyer was the first new member to speak. She was born in Texas, but was schooled in Wenatchee. She moved to Yakima this past January. She has one married son, who teaches history at Davis, with his wife teaching science at Eisenhower and a daughter who is a junior at Whitworth. After spending time as a para-educator, she decided to go back to school and earn her accounting degree. She is now employed at Alegria, working primarily in auditing.
LEE MARAS is a self proclaimed man of few words. Our new Yakima School District Athletic Director spent 19 years as a principal in Roslyn, after spending time as a teacher there as well. In fact, Lee spent most of his life in Roslyn, growing up in the rowdy, tough town as the son of a coal miner. His family immigrated from Croatia and he grew up poor, which forced his family to be resourceful by taking advantage of the yearly sheep drive (ask him what that means). He grew up playing sports and hunted and fished because he had to not necessarily because he liked it. He did come to love hunting and fishing which he continues to do today. He has three kids who are all in education in one way or another (an school office worker, a teacher, and a sixth year student at CWU). He has been married for 35 years and has six grandchildren, with one on the way. Ours is not his first Kiwanis Club as he was a member of the Roslyn Club, where he was the only member breathing without assistance.
Scott Lally showed up at one of our meeting unannounced and decided to join. He had been introduced by his father-in-law, who was very involved in the downtown Spokane Club. Scott grew up in Yakima, graduating from Eisenhower in 1997, YVCC and the UW. His first job was working for a trucking company. He went on a ride along to Los Angeles and back. The trip allowed him much time to think and he decided that he wanted to part of something bigger, so he became the third generation Chiropractor after going to school in St. Louis. He has been married for five years and has two children, 22-month old son Paul and 6-month old daughter Joy. Scott thanked us all for being so welcoming.
Next weeks meeting will feature Yakima’s sister city of Morelia showcasing travel photos from that Mexican city. The following week we will be at the Central Washington State Fair having lunch at the Bingo Tent. Details TBA.
