Russ Dix The meeting got off to a rousing start with President WENDY’s enthusiastic ringing of the bell. There were many guests introduced by RICHARD ENSEY following RUSS ROBERT’s invocation and JULIUS GLOVER's song leading.
Kamiakin had two members, Ken Johnson and Darlene Green, while Grandview had three, Harry Lohman, Jack Norbird and Dave (couldn’t read the last name). BETH KLINGELE brought her son Calvin, DON KOHLER was accompanied by wife Evelyn, and Russ brought prospective member Enrique Jevons.
There were few announcements (it is summer after all):
The Pioneer Picnic is Wednesday from 11:45- 1:30 at Ahtanum Youth Park. Show up to volunteer if you can.
The Lt. Governor BBQ will be at Ponderosa Tuesday night 6:00 pm. Let ROGER BELL know if you will be attending.
Dr. Scott Lally was officially inducted into our club. He is a chiropractor practicing with his father at their Yakima Avenue office.
JOHN WARREN was sergeant for the day, asking us questions about slang expressions of the 20’s. Only two tables escaped paying. President Wendy called Bingo, won by Dave our guest from Grandview. LYNN BUCHANAN conducted the 50/50 Raffle for which JOHN BENSON had the chance to win $498, but drew a two of hearts.
THERESA VITELLO introduced John Ward, Camp Roganunda camp director and “Crash”, a Camp Roganunda counselor. They spoke passionately about their experiences at Roganuda this past season. John talked about kids meeting and overcoming challenges. He talked of Mountainboarding and how the kids would work up to boarding from the teepees to K-lodge. He spoke of the horse program and how it taught the responsibility of caring for these animals as well as getting close to them (especially true this year as they had two miniature horses that allowed even the youngest campers to relate). He detailed the river exploration outing undertaken when the pool was closed. He explained that they reinstituted overnight camping and expounding upon how amazing it is for the kids to experience the night sky and the huge number of stars in view. Then he turned the program over to Crash.
She regaled us with stories and experiences from her two years as counselor at Camp. She told of the many “awesome” experiences and how the kids affect the counselors as much as the counselors affect the kids. Her two years did solidify the fact that she wants to become a teacher and work with kids full time. It is easy to see why her cabinmates would love her enthusiasm and energy and feel so connected with her. She did admit to having trouble returning to a “normal life” now that camp has ended, having to constantly resist the urge to break into camp songs.
John finished up with a slide show of the many Camp Roganunda activities and thanked us all for everything we do to keep camp going year after year. Seeing the photos and hearing our speaker's stories, it is easy to see why we continue to support Camp Roganunda.
