 Yakima News & Information

AUGUST 5, 2008

Beth Klingele

It was a blast from the past as past past past (1999) president PAT DANIELSON took the helm whilst our fearless leaders were preparing their budgets.

We welcomed our newest member SCOTT LALLY. Standing in for the late arriving scribe, LORI , “I can’t wait for Kiwanis bare day! “, CROW greeted you, (thanks Lori!), JO MCCLAIN gave a wonderful invocation and thank goodness STAN PRATT was in attendance to lead us in song.

KARL CORPRON reported on a successful Kiwanis Golf and Barbeque and drew for fabulous prizes donated by Lincoln Ave. Espresso won by Mike Wilson’s brother in law and Karl’s business, Design Central won by Jeanne Soelberg.

Stand in President Pat then reminded us of the Pioneer Picnic coming on Thursday August 20th and asked volunteers to show up at Ahtanum Park at 11:30 to serve seniors until about 1pm. This is a fun event to honor our great seniors.

STEVE EMHOFF would like volunteers to help with decorating and the silent auction for our installation dinner for incoming President RON ZIRKLE on Tuesday October 7th. Contact Steve, our Willie Nelson lookalike at steve@emhoffgroup.com or 453-5566.

JOHN BENSON reported that Kiwanis day at the fair is a go and the details are in the works.

Karl won, and then lost the 50/50 which is getting really big!

Don’t miss this week’s program on CAMP ROGANUNDA – a report on this year’s camp season.

Our speaker was our northern venturing former member Lynn Smith who works for British Petroleum (BP). Lynn reported on oil and gas drilling on the North Slope of Alaska. Lynn works out of Prudhoe Bay. He’s worked their since 1968, other than his brief two year stint in Yakima and says oil and gas are in his blood. The region produces approximately 700 barrels per day, down from 800 in it’s hey day. Lynn reports that the decrease in production is cause for concern. The oil is free flowing from 6500 to 9500 feet below the surface, pushed up from the ground from the gas below. Several companies own or lease the rights to the oil in the area, the biggest being Exxon. Other companies are BP, Conoco, E&I and a few others. Horizontal drilling is the new technique that gets the oil out of the ground much quicker and at less cost. A gas pipeline proposed by Conoco and BP is in the works and is awaiting legislative approval which would create 7500 new jobs in Alaska. It should be noted that the diesel BP produces for its own rigs costs about 14 cents per gallon to produce. Lynn did not have an explanation as to why the cost is over $4 at the pump.

Editors Note: Don't forget the 16th annual Case of the Blues and All That Jazz coming up this Saturday August 16th at 3:30 at Sarg Hubbard Park. Thanks to all the Kiwanians who are volunteering for this great community event!
