Russ Dix KARL CORPRON greeted the day’s two guests: prospective member Pat Crow, brought by RUSS ROBERTS; and Roger Wentz, brought by THERESA VITELLO. STEVE SOELBERG stepped in to invocate, while JULIUS GLOVER led us in song.
Theresa announced the upcoming Campfire Yard Sale. She will be happy to pick up any items for the one-day only event to be held on Friday, June 6th. Call her if you have items you wish to donate.
Kiwanis Work Day is this coming Saturday. Breakfast will be served promptly at 8:00 am, so work can get going on time. There are 12 people signed up for Pizza & Poker the night before, still time and room if a worker wanted to go up Friday night.
MARYBETH WRIGHT thanked everyone who worked Blue Jeans, and those who purchased left over candy. While not a money maker for the club, the impact on kids is immeasurable. She, in turn, was thanked by President WENDY for her efforts on making this year’s event a success.
KIRSTEN DANIELSON announced a Rock the Gap Committee Meeting this coming Monday (5/19) in the Greenway office. Social begins at 4:30 with snacks, and the actual meeting gets going at 5:00.
SPENCER HATTON made a request for silent auction items for Rock the Gap, coming May 31st. He is looking for wine, CD’s, group baskets or individual items of $100+ value. There will also be a desert auction this year. Deadline for items is May 21st (VERY SOON!). Contact Spencer today with your item(s). He will arrange pick up.
Sergeant Karl quizzed the tables on Mother’s Day trivia, with many correct answers (except for the one about the most kids ever – 69! to a woman in Russia). President Wendy tried to forget bingo and 50/50, but STAN PRATT did duty as bingo caller and LYNN BUCHANAN did his 50/50 thing. STEVE PICKETT and BOB BROWN were the respective winners, but Bob only drew an ace in the 50/50 Raffle which was not good enough to win the $238 up for grabs.
SHAREN ALLBEE introduced Charles Ross, State Representative for the 14th District. He moved to Yakima at age 3. He served in the navy from 1991 to 1995, spending time on the USS Kitty Hawk in the Persian Gulf. He is most famously known as mayor of Naches and our State Representative. It was in this most recent capacity that Charles spoke to us.
He started his talk with a great story about how people have built this country and how that directly affected his family during this past Mother’s Day because of the closeknit Naches community. He explained that his belief is that we, as a nation, have taken care of ourselves first before asking our friends and neighbors for help. That core belief is something he does not apologize for as he represents us in Olympia.
He talked about the two bills he was successful with this past session – the Eluding Bill and the Gang Violence Bill. He stressed that a legislator must be focused on one or two things in order to accomplish anything meaningful. These two bills have been his focus for the past two sessions and he is now achieving results. He said he will be back looking for funding for his Gang Violence Bill this next session, but was happy to get as far as he did with both bills.
He encouraged us to ask questions and pledged to always be available for constituent concerns, even though sometimes he has to say no if they don’t match what is necessary for the greater good. Charles closing remarks covered his belief that one of his jobs is getting government out of the way of good ideas and his awe that an average person like himself can be living his dream.
