MAY 6, 2008

Beth Klingele

Our Annual Meeting was hosted by CHRISTINE COTE, recently promoted to President of Perry Technical Institute, the hidden treasure of Yakima. We had a lovely lunch and boy, do we sound good singing in that auditorium! Must be the acoustics…

This being our annual meeting the following were elected to their respected offices. Thank you Kiwanians for serving!

RON ZIRKLE- President
CHRISTINE – President Elect
LINDA HACKETT – Vice President
New Board Members – 2008-2009: PAT ANDREOTTI, BOB BROWN, LORI CROW, AMY NEAL

MARY BETH WRIGHT has got blue jeans well organized and well staffed. The games began Monday. Stop by the Davis Gym tonight and check it out.

Don’t forget, Rock the Gap silent auction items need to be brought to the club or to Spenser asap. Please don’t wait until the last minute as it puts a lot of extra strain on the Hatton's.

There will be a Rock the Gap meeting Thursday noon at Perry Tech.

Christine began our program with some facts about Perry Technical Institute. The school began 70 years ago with a donation from Harriet I Perry. It graduates 250 students per year with an average 93% placement rate of students IN THEIR CHOSEN FIELD. 72% of the graduates stay in Washington and 75% of those stay in Eastern Washington. Technical schools are very important to our economy. With 4 out of 5 manufacturers reporting a severe shortage of skilled workers, technical schools are vital. Perry has increased the number of women students from 6% to 15% in the last year. New programs include Office Administration and Medical Office Administration.

Christine announced that the new communications complex will be named the Eugene Shields Technical Training Center in honor of longtime supporter (and Kiwanis member).
A big thank you to Del Pearson, Gene Shields and Dr. Mike for reviewing all of the scholarship applications.

Erin Fishburn, Foundation Director introduced the recipients of the twelve $1000 Kiwanis Scholarships which were presented by DELMER PEARSON and President Wendy. Each recipient gave a heartfelt thank you speech. The students were poised and all expressed a desire to give back to Perry and their community after graduation. It is very evident that Christine and Erin and all of the staff at Perry Tech have trained these students well. We are very proud of all of them.

The scholarship recipients are:
Rick Segovia – Electrical
Fred Edward – HVAC
Andrea Barwin – Telecommunications
Eric Lopez – Electrical
Jonathon Jurmu – Machine Technology
Cherlene Wright – Graphics
Nester Fernandez – Automotive
Jennifer Burckhard – Graphics
Megan Helms – Graphics
D. Tye Walker – Office Administration - Wow!
Ryan Bellish – Instrumentation
Keith Meers - Instrumentation
