APRIL 29, 2008
Pat Danielson With our PRESIDENT WENDY AGUILAR off for training for her real job, our famous/infamous PRESIDENT ELECT RON ZIRKLE, Esquire was our leader. Ron greeted us warmly and with a "little" humor (Come October, the meetings should be lively!). DON DAVIDSON and PAT DANIELSON (who was late!) greeted us, JULIUS GLOVER led us in singing and JO MCLAIN prayed for us.
GUESTS: Janet Wolfe and
Wen Taylor from Prosser; Lt. Governor Ken Johnson and Past Lt. Governor Darlene Green from Kamiakin; Jon Ward from Campfire; Evelyn Kohler wife of DON KOHLER.
A card was being passed around for AMY NEAL whose mother, Susan, died this week. Susan lost her 2 year bout with cancer. She had helped our club with Camp Roganunda workday and also enjoyed Rock the Gap with us! Our deepest sympathies are with Amy and Garon.
ANNOUCEMENTS:
LORI CROW shared the quilt that her residents and staff at Ponderosa have made for Rock the Gap. Chances on the quilt that would be a great wall hanging with a wine theme will be sold at RTG for $5.00 each and you must be present to win! Thank you Lori and Ponderosa. They have been active with volunteering at Rock the Gap for many years with several of them painting the rocks!
STEVE PICKETT announced the past presidents will meet Tuesday, May 6 at 7 a.m. at YVMH cafeteria.
MARY BETH WRIGHT reminded us that BLUE JEANS BASKETBALL is right around the corner -- Yes, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at Davis High School upper gym. See you there and she also needs a few more volunteers so give her a call and volunteer. It is easy and worthwhile -- just our kind of thing.
LYNN BUCHANAN is putting together a "flying" interclub for Thursday morning for those lucky enough to go! Have a wonderful time!
KAMIAKIN KIWANIS is having their fashion show on May 8th at 6 p.m. at Howard Johnsons. Some of the models are our very own Roger Bell and Steve Emhoff. It is $25 per person. Call Darlene Green asap if you can attend. 945-5553.
JON from Camp Roganunda reminded us of Camp Workday on May 17 and passed around the signup. We have about 30 people signed up. Call GARY CHALFONT or THERESA VITELLO to sign up.
ROCK THE GAP signup has been started by the VOLUNTEER MOTIVATOR (NAZI) PAT DANIELSON. You will be hearing from her again and again!
KL WOMBACHER as our Sgt. for the day then brought in money from all of us...good job KL.
Some of the brags were from BECKY SCHOLL saying that the production of Wizard of Oz at Davis High School is great and go see it. JO MCLAIN announced that Aktion Club helped at March of Dimes and also DAN MARPLES' employees raised over $6700 for March of Dimes. RON ZIRKLE announced his retirement for the end of the year "so he can dedicate his time to Kiwanis Presidency".
LORI CROW was then the winner/loser at the 50/50. Another week for a chance at big money! and JOHN WARREN was the kind of big money winner of Bingo!
Our mystery program was then introduced by program chairperson, KIRSTEN DANIELSON. The introduction was almost longer than the program and it was none other than RON ZIRKLE! Ron shared with us the statistics he has gathered regarding "Is Yakima a Safe Place to Live". His conclusion is that if you are not active in criminal activity or drugs then you are pretty safe as a law abiding citizen. He said that in the last year 4 of the 57 homicide cases filed in Yakima County were either strangers or not involved in criminal activity. Most people know the person who killed them or the killings are gang related, drug or alcohol related or have other criminal activity. Gang violence is again on the rise in Yakima County.
Ron says that the government cannot solve the problems but must be dealt with by families and programs to keep the kids off the streets. We need to give more support to schools and community groups to help those with mental illness.
Remember next weeks meeting is our annual meeting at Perry Tech and lunch will be catered by 901 Pasta.
