Russ Dix

STEVE SOELBERG greeted and invocated to get the meeting started right. THERESA VITELLO brought the only guest of the day, Rick DeVilla her newest Campfire Board Member.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
ROGER BELL presented a Distinguished Club Secretary Award to former secretary LOUISE TABAYOYAN who earned her award during the STEVE PICKETT administration.

President WENDY reported on the YWCA Luncheon attended by many Kiwanis members. She brought this to our attention as the YWCA is her President’s Project and will be the recipient of Rock the Gap 2008 proceeds. Our YW served over 8,000 people last year and will benefit greatly from our support.

Board Meeting this coming Thursday, May 1st.

SIGNUPS
MARYBETH WRIGHT passed the salmon colored sheet for Blue Jeans Basketball, May 5, 6, & 7.

Theresa Vitello circulated a standard white one for the upcoming Kiwanis Camp Roganunda Work Day, May17th.

FUNSTUFF
Sergeant-at-Arms, CHERIE ERGESON, was too busy moving to make the meeting, so JOHN WARREN was the emergency stand-in. President WENDY called the day’s game of Postage Stamp Bingo, won by both CORKY MATTINGLY & JOHN BENSON on B-11. Lynn Buchanan conducted the 50/50 Raffle (for $180.50 even before the day‘s take), but winning ticket holder BOB BROWN drew a seven of diamonds.

PROGRAM
THERESA VITELLO was the day’s featured speaker, talking about what she knows best Campfire! She tried to tell us everything we might not already know about Campfire.

It is quite a long list, starting with the traditional activities such as:
The Annual Dinner - held this past year at the Ahtanum Youth Barn
Candy Sales - which she told us would soon be changing to a more health conscious sales effort
Camp Roganunda - with its soon to be installed new pool deck thanks to the Kiwanis Charitable Trust and cool themed camps (the new Mountainboards were expertly demonstrated by MEL LIGHT) designed to appeal to a slightly older audience
Babysitting Classes - expanded to every other months thanks to support from the United Way
Youth Olympics - entering it’s third year
And moving on to new activities like:
Life Skills Classes - a partnership with ESD 105 to teach skills to elementary and middle school children throughout the valley
“I CAN be a Safe Kid" - a pilot program in Ellensburg designed to reinforce what families and schools are teaching about strangers
Operation Thank You - kids collecting supplies to send to schools in Iraq
Special Camps -
Halloween - the weekend before Halloween complete with family Halloween activities
Winter Break and Spring Break - both three day camps for kids held during the holidays
Family Boot Camp - to be held once a week for eight weeks this summer in partnership with Bravo Company
It is impossible to capture the enthusiasm Theresa expresses as she describes the many activities in which Campfire is involved.

She told lots of great stories, like the one about moving the Campfire offices two days after the annual dinner and the resulting great yard sale that will become another annual event. She stressed that Campfire is going through an evolution, keeping traditional activities while adding new, exciting ones. She has worked hard this first 15 months to “meet the needs of the community while holding the interest of the kids.” This national mandate has allowed each local chapter to find their own niche. With Theresa at the helm, the niche is ever expanding.
