APRIL 15, 2008

Pat Danielson

We had an express meeting so those that were available could attend the memorial for Shirley Ackley. RUSS ACKLEY, a former member of our Club, planted a tree in Shirley's memory at the Greenway and had a coffee and cake gathering at the Greenway office.

At our express meeting LINDA HACKETT greeted us warmly, JAY CARROLL stepped up and volunteered to pray for us and since I was still in the food line, I think it was JULIUS GLOVER who led us in song. And again we did not sound too bad!

ANNOUCEMENTS: We were reminded by THERESA VITELLO that Roganunda work day is May 17 with the preevening pizza and poker on May 16. Signups for still available for various projects. Breakfast and Lunch will be served on the day of the workday by me and my committee and we promise it will be good.

PRESIDENT WENDY then announced that we will be looking for desserts to be donated for auction at the Rock the Gap evening. This is something new we are trying and hope it will be a great success. So if you have a connection with a good dessert maker, let Wendy know.

STEVE EMHOFF shared that he attended the Key Club Conference in Seattle which had over 1400 young people in attendance. We had 3 from our Eisenhower Key Club attending.

PRESIDENT WENDY then called a quick game of Bingo and MAC PORTER won! Then the 50/50 winner/loser was KARL CORPRON. The pot still grows! It was $180 for the winner this time if we had a winner!

KIRSTEN DANIELSON, our program chairperson, then announced our program Dave Hargreaves from Argus Insurance who shared with us a video of Art Ronick, VP of the Federal Reserve Bank, speaking about the ROI and Economics of poverty and Early Childhood Development. Mr. Ronick had led a committee that put into numbers the benefits of early childhood development of at risk children and their parents. He discovered that it was a 7 to 1 ratio on return of investment, with a 16% annual rate of return. Four percent is a return from the child and 12% is a public return.

Ready by Five is part of this early childhood development (birth to 5 yrs old) that is coming to Yakima www.readybyfive.org though funding by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a public-private partnership, Thrive by Five Washington. The goal is to serve 1000 parents and 3,700 children in the East Yakima area.

Changes in the following are hoped to be achieved by Ready by Five:

Right now 56% of the kindergarten children in Washington are not ready for school.

Large expense to communities of jails and juvenile justice and gangs.

Elizabeth Gonzales from Early Childhood Development assisted Dave in this presentation.

Program next week is Camp Fire with our own Theresa Vitello.

We then had a short report from MIKE WILSON AND GENE ROSTVOLD on Kiwanis Park signage and development.
