MARCH 11, 2008
Russ Dix RUSS DIX greeted the day’s three guests: Evelyn Kohler, accompanying husband DON KOHLER; LeAnn Hunter, brought by RON ANDERSON; and Jon Ward, Camp Roganunda director, brought by THERESA VITELLO. President WENDY was also pleased to welcome Macy Grace, daughter of CHELSEA SNODGRASS. JO MCCLAIN was the meeting’s invocator.
Theresa distributed Camp Roganunda brochures and talked about the upcoming Spring Break Mini Day Camp to be held April 1-3. The cost is $25 and the theme is “Around The World”, which promises to be lots of fun for those who aren’t already busy Spring Vacation.
Guest Jon Ward announced Kiwanis Work Day will be May 17th. He listed some of the projects under consideration, but mentioned that there is still too much snow to totally determine what needs to be completed. AMY NEAL enticed us all with the promise of a night of beer, pizza, and poker for those who wish to come up Friday evening, May 16th.
MARYBETH WRIGHT reminded us to mark our calendars for Blue Jeans Basketball, coming to the Davis Gym on May 5, 6 & 7. A signup sheet will be passed around at a future meeting, so make sure you are there to sign up for your favorite job.
KIRSTEN DANIELSON announced a Rock the Gap Meeting this coming Thursday (3/13) in the Greenway office. Pre-meeting begins at 4:30 with snacks and libations while the actual meeting gets going at 5:00.
Amy quizzed each table on their knowledge of past US presidents. SETH SHEA called Bingo, won by GENE ROSTVOLD. LYNN BUCHANAN suspiciously had the opportunity to win the 50/50 Raffle Prize of $107.50, but drew a seven of hearts.
TRESSA SHOCKLEY was called upon to introduce two programs.
First up was Tony Farina, president of New Leaders of Yakima County (NLoYC). He explained that this group of approximately 250 members meets every other month or so to “mobilize leadership for the betterment of Yakima County”. This is accomplished at the meetings by 1) networking professionally and personally 2) promoting Yakima & 3) developing leadership through speakers and presentations. Recent topics have covered downtown development, the wine industry, Yakima Bears, and most recently, the Yakima Community Foundation. Tony stressed that this group charges no dues to join and welcomes people of all ages. It is sponsored by the United Way, part of a national initiative, and relies on local businesses to sponsor each meeting.
Jessica Moskwa, the new Executive Director of Allied Arts, was next. Strangely enough, she is a member of the NLoYC, and couldn’t say enough good things about the organization and what it has meant to her. She then launched into the many new things that are happening at Allied Arts including:
a new arts van for six weeks of summer programs
an ongoing family theater series
the Peggy Lewis Gallery opening Friday 3-14 showcasing the work of Javier Lopez Ortiz
the Latino Cultural Film Series starting Thursday 3-13
open mike poetry night Wednesday 3-12
multiple classes and workshops
Not new, but Allied Arts’ major fundraiser, is the Fresh Hop Ale Festival. It will be held on October 4 this year.
Jessica encouraged us all to stay current on the activities of Allied Arts through either their printed or e-mailed newsletters. You can sign up on their website, www.alliedartsyakima.org, or visit for additional information on their many programs.
