FEBRUARY 19, 2008
Pat Danielson Another great meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Yakima also known as "The Downtown Club". We were greeted by BOB BROWN who recently was named The National DAR Community Service Award winner by the Narcissa Whitman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revoluntion. We are proud of you, Bob!
BECKY SCHOLL is taking over in JULIUS GLOVER'S absence in leading our singing and a fine job she does! STEVE SOELBERG then challenged us with prayer and our lone guest, Evelyn Kohler was introduced by her husband DON KOHLER. Thank you Evelyn for bringing Don and gracing us with your presence.
PRESIDENT WENDY AGUILAR shared that she had attended the Yakima School Board Meeting where she accepted a Thank You for the trust and our donation to the Zaephel (SP?) Stadium bleacher project. (You would think I should be able to spell that, but it escapes me right now!)
ANNOUNCEMENTS: GENE ROSTVOLD who is so busy promoting our community through sports and kids shared information on the State 1B Basketball Tournaments and the coming State 1A Basketball Tournaments. He reminded our Club members that it was through donations made by our Club and by our Trust and the floor and a basket was purchased so that these tournaments and the money that comes with them could be here in Yakima!
Coming events are the Rock the Gap Committee meeting this Thursday and the Division 50 Council meeting on Tuesday. Both of these events have occurred now that the Bulletin is being written.
SGT. KIRSTEN DANIELSON having forgotten she was on call , then did her very best to bring in the bucks for the administrative budget. She got several Brag Bucks and then brought even more money in by challenging everyone with their knowledge or lack thereof of Bulletin trivia.
DON DAVIDSON then won Bingo and STEVE EMHOFF won/lost the 50/50 which means the pot grows again!
Our program then introduced himself! As a former member and Past President, Ray Cyr, who now is a teacher at Davis High School, was very familiar with our Club and we actually did not give him too bad a time. His message was great and his students he brought along, Franscisco and Sunny were a great addition to Ray's sharing of his Skills USA program.
Skills USA is an applied method of learning and is used by Ray to develop technical and career building skills in his wood shop labs. Using Skills USA the students develop into leaders in our community's work places. Skills USA is the formerly VICA program that many are familiar with. Ray's students participate in the Playhouse on Parade for EPIC and build the DSH Pearl (the Pirate Ship) last year. They are now building thier third playhouse for EPIC and also are building one for a fund raising project for their Skills USA program. Ray and his students then shared information and a slide show of the recent competition that they host and won many state positions. Thank you Ray for a great program and displaying what a great President you were for our Club and how your leadership skills and caring concerns are now being shared with your students.
Next week's program is on the latest from Black Rock.
