JANUARY 15, 2008

Pat Danielson

A full house greeted us on a beautiful but cold January day. STEVE SOELBERG greeted us at the door and introduced all of our guests. PRESIDENT WENDY left her gavel in her car which could have been a good idea since Selah was our visting interclub and we have a reputation with them of disappearing bells and gavels. BECKY SCHOLL gave us a wonderful New Year's invocation and since our Sgt. did NOT show up (KL)we did not have fines to pay.

Our guests were: the Selah Interclub, Don Skone, Marve Sunquist, Pat Favilla (guest of STEVE PICKETT) and Evelyn, wife and chaffeur of DON KOHLER.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Our President Wendy announced that she was passing around thank yous for all of us to participate in a Million Thank Yous a project to thank our country's service men.

STEVE EMHOFF announced that the Eisenhower Key Club raised $327 at Albertson's for Camp Prime Time on Saturday at their Rock a Thon (in rocking chairs).

Thank you to Steve Emhoff for his great job on our rosters that are now done and passed out to all in attendance. If you don't have one, that means you need to come to a meeting.

Steve's next announcement was for the January 26, Father/Daughter Dinner Dance. Joann Benson had sold the most tickets and won the weekend at Steve's cabin. Steve then presented a special gift to JOHN BENSON. He must have complained about the outdoor facilities because now he has a special lighted and heated (and uncomfortable) toilet seat! If you have not gotten your silent auction items to JO MCLAIN, give her a call or drop it off at the Clarion where Jo works.

Jane Glover (wife of JULIUS GLOVER) has had a bad fall and hit her head and now has a broken bone in her back. We send her wishes for a quick and painless recovery.

AKTION CLUB: Jo also reminded us that the Aktion Club has their installation banquet on January 22 at Englewood Christian Church. Dinner is $12 and let Jo know if you plan to attend.

ROCK THE GAP: The committee will meet Thursday, January 17, at noon at the Sub Shop on 2nd Street announced chairperson, KIRSTEN DANIELSON.

President Wendy then announced a LONG game of Bingo and then John Benson "won" the 50-50 but only drew a 10. But that is good, the pot needs to grow!

Kirsten, our program chairperson, then introduced our program, Herb Schmidt from the Selah Kiwanis (formerly from our club), and also a former Yakima School District employee and member of Selah City Council. Herb then shared his love of the outdoors that developed as a youth with Boy Scouts and continues today with his membership in the Highlanders and the Nature Conservancy. Also he works at the visitors information center for the Vistors and Convention Bureau. Herb explained that the Highlanders are an 18 member group that go hiking every Monday. They have traveled all over Washington. Most of the time they are on the East side by occasionally go over the mountains to the West side. Herb shared a slide show of beautiful photos that he and Don Skone put together of the money places they have hiked all in Washington State. You would have to really search for more beautiful pictures to enjoy of our area. Thank you, Herb, for sharing with us.

Next week's program is Nancy Leahy on Circle of Success.
