NOVEMBER 13, 2007
Russ Dix President WENDY got us going with a rather anemic “bell”, but JULIUS GLOVER soon switched us into high gear leading us all in America, JAY CARROLL invocated and RICHARD ENSEY introduced guests for the day: Ken Johnson, Kamiakin Club and our Lt. Governor; Evelyn Kohler, escorted by our very own DON KOHLER; and Neil Springer, hosted by STEVE PICKETT. There seemed to be some confusion as to whether Tressa Schokley was a guest or not, but we welcomed our soon to be newest member anyway.
KARL CORPRON passed around color samples of the new Kiwanis Club of Yakima, Downtown logo. Once a vendor is selected, members will be able to get shirts, jackets, and sweatshirts embroidered with anyone of the combinations.
CHELSEA SNODGRASS passed around a signup sheet for the upcoming Christmas Dinner. It will be December 18th from 6-8 at Englewood Christian Church. She also encouraged anyone who had photos of past celebrations to send them to her. Let her know as soon as possible if you plan to attend and who your guests will be.
Kiwanis Barbie returned in all her professional attire and Kiwanis nametag. PAT DANIELSON took her home until she brings a guest and Wendy passes her (Barbie, not Pat) on to someone else.
Neil Springer spoke briefly about First Tee, a life skills training course based on the game of golf, which is gaining ground in Yakima. Our club has donated $1,000 to First Tee to be used as scholarships. Neil told us that over 1.5 million children have been taught the nine core values of First Tee over the past 10 years. Once the facility is built at State Fair Park, kids in Yakima will have the same opportunity.
Steve Pickett called a game of "Spot Bingo", won by guest Ellie Strosahl. BOB BROWN won the right to choose in the 50/50 Raffle, but drew a 4. JOHN WARREN conducted Sergeant, where he fined all those who had not yet signed up for Salvation Army Bell Ringing, to occur on Tuesday, November 27th. He still has open spots, contact him today.
KIRSTEN DANIELSON introduced the day’s program, Anne Tipton and Ellie Strosahl of the Season’s Performance Hall.
Anne talked with us about the history of the Hall. How it was built in 1917 and based on a European design. It was the long time home to the First Church of Christ Scientists until they sold it to the Stosahl family in 2005, who pledged to create the nonprofit Performance Hall that inhabits the building today.
The Hall seats 425-450 and features a wide variety of musical style. Ellie then took over to explain the many upcoming performances:
Dec. 6th – CWU Jazz Band playing Ellington’s Jazz Nutcracker
Dec. 7th – Deadwood Revival, folk music
Dec. 8th – Yakima Southeast Community Choir, A gospel Christmas
Dec 14 & 15th – Brubeck Brothers will perform with the Yakima Symphony Orchestra
Dec. 21st – Yakima Symphony Youth Choir, A Baroque Christmas
Dec. 31st – Picoso Salsa Band from Seattle to ring in the new year.
JOHN BENSON reminded Ellie of the Brown Bag series of noon-time concerts every Friday. Five dollars gets you in the door so you can eat your sack lunch to some great music. Ellie encouraged anyone to come by during Saturday’s in December during the Season’s Open House and reminded everyone that they could always check upcoming events inside the front cover of each week’s On Magazine.
Tickets are always available at www.seasonsmusicfestival.com or by calling 453-1888. Box office hours are Monday thru Friday, 11-4. Anyone who attended the meeting was able to score free tickets to upcoming performances thanks to the generosity of our speakers, who brought a number of tickets to hand out.
NEXT WEEK’S PROGRAM – Jim Collins, Cascade Wine Company, and Big John, Chef extrordianaire, will talk about food and wine pairings for the upcoming Holidays.
