JULY 24, 2007
CHELSEA SNODGRASS On Tuesday’s club meeting we were greeted by LOUISE TABAYOYON and JAY CARROLL was passed the torch to lead the invocation. BARB GRECO, past president, served as interim president for us. We had one guest of SETH SHEA, Scott Woodward.
Barb presented “new member” RON ANDERSON with his Kiwanis pin and button. Since he had already performed his “do-da” things last time he was inducted into our club, Ron was awarded a blue button. Welcome back Ron!
Update: BRIAN BLOUNT is trying to get a group together for the Moon-lit Hike on Sunday, July 29th. If you are interested please contact him.
Our sergeant was PAT DANIELSON who challenged the tables to food trivia!
JOHN WARREN called a game of BINGO, not sure who won, that’s what happens when the scribe plays.
Our 50-50 ticket winner was SHANNON BIRD, however the pot continues to grow, as she didn’t pull a Jack.
Our program was Mike Gempler with the Washington Growers and he spoke about the Guest Worker Program. Gempler shared the various ways that people can come and work in the US on a temporary basis. There are different forms/documents based on the jobs and lengths of the employment. Companies are strongly advised to do background checks and make sure that documents match the person. This way they prevent themselves from getting in trouble. Unfortunately, regionally there have been some that have been raided and fined for not doing this. Gempler predicts that stricter laws and enforcement will occur in order to crack down on employing illegal immigrants. We may not see anything happen on a federal level as an election year approaches. The Northwest Growers Association has a program in place to hire temporary workers, particularly in Mexico, that is an example of a legal and humane method. We learned that prior to going across the border to hire works, they must first hire US citizens and if there is not enough people for the job, then they are able to look elsewhere.
