JUNE 12, 2007
Russ Dix Acting President STEVE EMHOFF opened the day’s meeting and had greeter AMY NEAL introduce guest Ron Anderson (who is a former member and prospective member) after we all sang America, led by CINDY FAHSHOLTZ on the piano, and heard the day’s invocation by RUSS ROBERTS.
First order of business was for former/past/soon-to-be-gone president JOE KENNISH present a 2005-2006 Distinguished Club Member pin the president of the day, Steve Emhoff.
CHRISTINE COTE announced that Rock the Gap earned around $22,000 in profit this year, up from $16,000 last year. She asked if committee members interested in a wrap up dinner Thursday evening would let her know right away and named next year’s chairperson, KIRSTEN DANIELSON.
Richard Enzy, a new member sponsored by BRIAN BLOUNT, was inducted by ROGER BELL. Brian praised Richard for volunteering at Rock the Gap before he had even become a member.
President for a day Steve reminded everyone that our club was still participating in the S.O.S. (Save Our Spectacles) program, to which Ron Anderson had contributed that very day. He also reminded the Father Daughter Committee that there would be a picnic at his cabin a week from Sunday.
LYNN BUCHANAN reminded those planning to attend Monday’s interclub to Ellensburg for their 85th Anniversary, to be in the Chamber lot at 11:00.
DR. MIKE WILSON reminded everyone that today is the last meeting to sign up for next week’s Golf Day. Golf will start at 2:00 and the meeting and barbeque will commence at 6:00. Let Dr. Mike know if you plan to attend either or both.
JOHN WARREN performed as Sergeant, conducting an art lesson/contest; WENDY AGUILAR conducted the 50/50 Raffle, for which Lynn Buchanan would have won $65.50 except he drew the Queen of hearts; and KAREN HALE called a game of Bingo, won by Cindy Fahsholtz.
Brian then introduced our speaker, Cheryl H. Hahn, the new director of the Larson Gallery. The Larson Gallery is located on the Yakima Valley Community College campus and was constructed in 1949. The goal of the Gallery is to stay in step with art and the community and to that end hosts a variety of shows every year, conducts summer workshops, and reaches out to the community with art related activities. Cheryl, who moved to Yakima from a much larger area, is a “practicing painter” who is represented by a gallery in Seattle. She obviously has connections in the art world, as she is preparing for a new event called City Views, that will draw on the talents of established artists to interpret their reaction - in art - to coming to Yakima. This new show will be at the Larson Gallery from September 16 to October 20. In conjunction with the exhibt, will be a mentoring day where artist Anita Lehmann will team with local architect Sherri Brockway in a day-long series of classes on campus. This show will be followed by Peoples of the Plateau in January and February of 2009 that will see the Larson Gallery working with both the Yakima Valley Museum and Allied Arts to create an exhibit that will bring visitors to the valley during the winter months.
Cheryl spoke with great enthusiasm about the possibilities of the Gallery and its accompanying Larson Gallery Guild, which owns a permanent art collection that is displayed throughout the YVCC campus. She will be a great addition to the area and another positive voice for our valley. Steve was impressed enough with her presentation, especially her ability to overcome technical difficulties, that he asked her to join our club.
REMEMBER, No regular meeting next Tuesday. It is Golf Day.
