SEPTEMBER 2, 2003
Beth Klingele NOTICE:
The Yakima Kiwanis membership will be requested on September 23, 2003, to vote on an increase in member dues. The proposed increase is $18.50 per year for all members. Annual member dues for general members would increase from $561.50 to $580 and senior members would increase from $106.50 to $125. The increase reflects the increase in dues from international and district recently passed.

More on Brian Blount.....
GEORGE F. HIXSON FELLOWSHIP honoree – BRIAN BLOUNT
Brian Blount was surprised by the award by our club of a Hixson, which represents a $1000 contribution, by our club to the Kiwanis International Foundation. Brian Blount joined our club in 1989 and was President for the 95-96 year. He has served on or chaired almost every committee that Kiwanis has. He is very involved with the YMCA and the Yakima Greenway and can be seen running or biking everywhere. Brian truly exemplifies the spirit of Kiwanis. Congratulations Brian!
PROGRAM: MEL MOORE and DIANNA JUAREZ – HOT SHOTS 3 ON 3 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT.
GENE ROSTVOLD introduced our program speakers who let us in on the success of the recently held 3 on 3 basketball tournament downtown. Dianna Juarez is the full time Sports Manager for the Yakima Sports Commission, which is a part of the Yakima Visitors and Convention Bureau. She was very involved with this tournament. Her job is to find sporting events and tournaments to come to Yakima to help boost tourism. She does everything from bidding tournaments to finding housing for the players, fans and families. Sports tourism is a growing sector of the tourism industry and Yakima is a perfect spot for it. The addition to the Sundome and the new fields at Kiwanis Park will help with bringing more events to Yakima. The next big sports event on September 12 and 13th is the Sundome Volleyball Festival.
Mel Moore is a fixture on the Yakima sports scene, having been involved in youth sports for years in the valley. He is currently serving as the part time Sports Director for the Yakima Sports Commission and he ran the 3on3 tournament with help from over 100 volunteers. The event was a success and may be the 2nd or 3rd largest 3 on 3 tournament in the State. There were over 200 teams that played over 800 games over the last weekend. It was a great example of celebrating cultural diversity, as there were teams from up and down the valley or all races, boys and girls, youth and adults. The Yakima Herald and other media sponsors really helped promote the event with lots of free advertising and printing. A real win – win event for Yakima.
Upcoming Programs:

Sept 16 – GENE ROSTVOLD and Doug Allen on Walleye Fishing
