Pat Danielson was awarded a Hixson award at the meeting Tuesday.
AUGUST 26, 2003

PAT DANIELSON

The last meeting in August and PRESIDENT BARB is without gavel. She has only one month left to redeem herself! New member PENNY BAKER helped with the greeter duties to try to get rid of that new member badge. ROD ALLEN led us in prayer and CHERI ERGESON introduced our guests. Kathy Smith was brought by husband LYNN SMITH and an Interclub from Apple Valley of Gae, Jerry, Josh, Mary Tony and Don joined us. Additional guests, Dennell and Darin Russell, were with one of our speakers. A surprise guest, introduced later was Larry Danielson, spouse of PAT.

President Barb then proceeded to explain about one of the most honored awards a Kiwanian can receive -- the George F. Hixson Fellow. The Hixson Award is granted to those individuals who have had a contribution of $1,000 made in their honor. The $1,000 donation to the Kiwanis International Foundation's endowment fund is in support of the International Worldwide Service Project, Iodine Deficiency Disorders. The award was presented to the most shocked person in the crowd -- me, PAT DANIELSON. I was so surprised at the time that I could not tell everyone how much the award meant to me. To get an award for doing things you love to do is truly icing on the cake. To the Board of Directors and to our membership, thank you very much. It is an honor and a pleasure to be a member of this Club.

Now back to business...

ROSTERS: VELMA CRAWFORD is in charge of our roster for next year and everyone needs to get her your latest addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. If they end up wrong in the roster, it will be your own fault. Email Velma with any changes or corrections you want made in the roster. VECRAWFORD@prodigy.net Also, STEVE EMHOFF, our own Lt. Governor, will be taking new photos if you would like a new one in the Roster. Contact Steve at broker4u@wolfenet.com

CHAIN GANG: It is that time again, yes, football time, and MEL LIGHT AND JON ISON are in charge of the sign ups. They start in a week so contact Mel or Jon to get your favorite date and team. Remember you don't have to be a football expert to do Chain Gang and it is a great time. MLIGHT@CI.YAKIMA.WA.US

AKTION CLUB: Doug asked for volunteers for Tuesday night for rides for the Aktion Club members. Several volunteered. This is our last meeting we are responsible for this Kiwanis year. Thank you to LINDA HACKETT, JERRY HENDERSON AND DOUG COCHRAN for their efforts.

PICNIC HONORING LT GOVERNORS, PINKY AND STEVE. The Division is gathering Thursday night, August 28, at McClure School, 1222 S. 22nd Ave, 6:30 p.m. to thank former Lt. Governor Pinky Paxton and our own Lt. Governor Steve Emhoff. It is a hamburger BBQ Potluck. It is $3.00 per person and you also should bring a salad or dessert.

SARGEANT: CORKY MATTINGLY, whom everyone should have gotten mail from this week, used a Labor Day theme to get us all to contribute to the administrative budget. STEVE EMHOFF paid up for his pleasurable duties of escorting Bonnie Dunbar at the District Convention, DAN EVANS contributed on behalf of taking a new wife and making her take his name. Congratulations to Dan and Darci. RICH LEWIS gave a Happy Buck to announce his Best of Breed and Herding Dog and new Grandma Corky announced her new Granddaughter, Sadie Elizabeth Nelson, daughter of KC Nelson. Then all grandparents gave a dollar to honor Sadie!

BINGO: LYNN SMITH called Bingo and JOHN BENSON won the $5.00!

OUR PROGRAM: BETH KLINGELE then introduced Debbie While that works for Tri Ply and for Safeway. Debbie then told us her story of being nearly killed in a drunken driving accident and that she was the drunken driver. Debbie explained that she is a recovering alcoholic and is recovering in no small part to Deputy Sheriff Mike Russell, our other speaker. Mike was the lst officer on the scene of Debbie's accident. He gave her a ticket for drinking and driving. She had been drinking from 1 to 10 p.m. that day and had a 1/2 gal. of Black Velvet in the car when she had the accident. Deputy Russell stayed at the hospital with her and at the time she had a .22 blood alcohol level even 3 hours after the accident. She had 186 stitches in her head. She still has headaches and stroke like symptoms but is very grateful to be alive.

Deputy Russell then impressed on us the dangers of drinking and driving. The vast majority don't think they have had too much to drink when they are drinking and driving. Drugs, even prescription drugs, can be a danger when driving. Pain medication is often a cause for DUI's. .08 is the legal limit. The average person can have 2 drinks in an hour and be at the limit. Your size and metabolism can effect your reactions. Four to five beers will take 10 hours to get out of your body. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE AT ALL. BE AN EXAMPLE TO YOUR CHILDREN.
