Beth Klingele REMEMBER: MEETING LOCATION CHANGE: NEXT WEEK WE’RE AT THE YAKIMA VALLEY MUSEUM.
FOLLOWING WEEK AT EPIC PLACE
We were greeted by DAWN ALIVERTI, invocated by STEVE SOELBERG and fleeced by sergeant JAY CARROLL. Presiding as stand-in President for the second week in a row was President Elect RUSS DIX. Our guests were Lyn Buchanan and intern with Idea Marketing, Amanda Fascholz, guest of President Elect RUSS DIX.
LOUISE TABAYOYON secretaried us on her own for the first time. We sadly said goodbye to VELMA CRAWFORD as our 10year + Secretary. Russ presented Velma with the obligatory chocolates, because “I still may need something”. Then sergeant Jay Carroll happily fined Velma, because now he can, and she was welcomed into membership as a regular Kiwanian.
A message from Velma:
"I want to thank all of the club members and tell them how much I have appreciated being their Secretary/Treasurer for 10 plus years. Retiring from the job was a difficult decision to make but I felt it was time. I have had the privilege of working with so many wonderful people and hope to continue doing this in other capacities."

JACK GILBERT reported that Vintiques Bingo was successful, albeit slow on Friday. The fundraiser brought in $686.50 to our coffers. Thanks Jack!
STEVE EMHOFF and AUDREY RICE reminded us our own district convention will be held here in Yakima at the two Red Lion Hotels Thursday through Sunday August 14-17. A few more volunteers would be greatly appreciated, contact Audrey if you can help out for an hour or two or three. Even if you’re not signed up for the Convention, you can attend any of the meals for just the cost of the meal. Contact Steve Emhoff or Audrey this week if you would like to attend. Friday’s kickoff lunch speaker is Dr. Jerrilyn McIntyre, President of CWU and Saturday night’s keynote dinner speaker is astronaut Dr. Bonnie Dunbar.
JOE KENNISH read a letter from the Long’s Foundation that awarded $10, 000 to Campfire for repairs to the dining hall at Camp Roganunda. Then he presented the letter to AMY NEAL and hugs we’re exchanged. Wow! Isn’t it wonderful to have great new members.
PROGRAM: BILL COBABE, CITY OF YAKIMA
SALLY WHITE introduced BILL COBABE, Director of Neighborhood Development for the City of Yakima who spoke to us mostly on the success of Yakima’s anti-grafitti program. The program has acquired a bright yellow suburban that is equipped with two paint sprayers and a generator, which has really helped the effort to cover up graffiti as soon as it happens. They also have the ability to match the color of the wall they’re painting over. There is an anti-graffiti ordinance in the works that will make the perpetrator subject to a serious misdemeanor violation. The ordinance is supported by the juvenile justice system. The group has also produced an anti-graffiti video that will be presented in the schools
Mr. Cobabe also spoke briefly about the new Yakima Downtown Association that is forming and plans to hire a manager to help reinvent downtown.
