JULY 15, 2003
Russ Dix BARBARA POOL greeted us at a “guest” location, Epic Place. Lunch was catered by KEITH NELSON, which made a nice change from Red Lion food. JULIUS GLOVER led us in song and STEVE SOLBERG invocated. CHERIE EREGESON introduced guests: an attempted (only two, plus Marion’s son, found their way to our guest location) interclub from Apple Valley. We tried to sing the discontinued Welcome Song, but our unenthusiastic rendition did not really make anyone feel welcome.
AMY NEAL reported that the BBQ at her home last Saturday was fun for all who attended. The two new members, CHRISTINE NEILL and DAN EVANS, who came got to know some of our more established members quite well during the party.
JACK GILBERT again passed the sign up sheet for Vintiques Bingo. He is still looking for workers on August 1 & 2. Give him a call if you are able to help.
STEVE EMHOFF gave an interclub report. BARB GRECO, VELMA CRAWFORD, RICH LEWIS, and Steve himself went to Cle Elum. RUSS ACKLEY, STAN PRATT, DAN EVANS, Barb, and Steve went somewhere Thursday morning (I am guessing Sunnyside).
LINDA HACKETT is in need of a program for next week’s Action club meeting (Tuesday evening). She will also be needing three drivers for after the meeting. Call her if you can help.
AUDREY RICE passed a sign up sheet for the upcoming District Convention in Yakima on August 14-17. Our club is responsible for the registration table, but Audrey is also taking names of those who want to help in other capacities. Let her know if you are interested. Also, think about attending. There is no traveling and it would give you a chance to meet other Kiwanis from around the district.
JON ISON was a masterful sergeant. Sometimes you get fined for wearing summer garb and sometimes you get fined for not wearing summer garb. There is no winning with the sergeant.
Our Gal Sal (SALLY BALDWIN) introduced/roasted speaker Martin Howell of Lemaster and Daniels. He gave a very entertaining talk about getting along with others. He handed out a sheet on Five Basic Principles when working with others and getting things done. He said they boiled down to: “Can I treat people with respect” and “What can I do to get the process started”. He then discussed a number of pitfalls to good group and individual problem solving with another handout. It was informative as well as fun. He uses these same principles every day in his position as corporate psychology guy and wellness in the workplace consultant at Lemaster & Daniels. He told us he learned them while living in 13 countries and 22 states before settling in Yakima in 1987.
The 5 principles for those of you who were not at the meeting:
1) Focus on the situation, issue, or behavior, not on the problem.
2) Maintain the self-confidence and self-esteem of others.
3) Maintain constructive relationships.
4) Take initiative to make things better.
5) Lead by example.
