JUNE 10, 2003

Steve Pickett

Our cheerful greeter today was Dawn Aliverti (aka the Queen of Commodes) and she introduced several guests. Sally Baldwin brought Neva Hilfiker as a guest. Pat Danielson’s guest was Steve Bergman and Mike McCabe joined us as well. Mike is from Palm Springs, CA. and is a candidate for the vacant position of Police Chief for the City of Yakima.

It is always exciting to have new folks join our club and we were able to induct 2 new people today. New member Chris Cote was inducted and Chris was sponsored by Amy Neal. Former member Jon Ison saw the errors of his ways and applied to rejoin our Club. We welcome Jon back to our fold and look forward to many projects he will chair in the years to come. Jon was sponsored by Roger Bell and Archie Sutton.

Jay Carroll did a masterful job of being Sergeant of Arms as there were few pockets left unfleeced.

John Warren gave a report on Camp Roganunda workday. There were lots of people and lots of food on Saturday and most importantly….all had a good time. John reported that members contributed 228 service hours and if guests hours were added in there was 437 hours donated. John was almost in tears as he passed the baton of Chair of Roganunda Workday for next year to Wendy Aguilar.

COMING EVENTS:
· Memorial for Pete Peterson Saturday, June 14th at 11:00 AM, Wesley United Methodist Church located at 48th and Chestnut.
· Kiwanis Golf day will be June 24th and Dan Marples is looking for contestants to sign up for this fun event. Special emphasis this year is to encourage our female members to participate. If you have items that can be donated for prizes see Dan, Mark Hampton or Mac Porter.
· Kiwanis swim meet June 27, 28 and 29. John Benson could use some extra muscle on Friday night to load the grills into a pickup. If you can help please give John a call.
· Barbeque at Amy Neal’s home on July 12th at 3PM. Bring your favorite barbeque meat (no soy burgers allowed) and plan on a great time.
· J Blake is looking for volunteers to assist with a Bingo booth for the 4th of July celebration at the Central Washington Fairgrounds. John would appreciate a call if you can give a few hours of your time.

Spencer Hatton gave a financial report on the recently completed Kiwanis yard sale and presented a check to the Trinity Baptist Youth Group via Steve Solberg for the use of their facilities.

Linda Hackett gave a recap of the Rock the Gap project and announced there is excess food for sale. If you need some supplemental goodies for your next barbeque please contact Linda.

Our program speaker this week was Ann Moneymaker who works for the Yakima Valley Visitors and Convention Bureau. Her PowerPoint presentation was titled Embracing the Power of Tourism. She showed the huge number of $$ brought to our community by the various cultural, professional and sporting events. Significant efforts have been made by the Yakima Visitors and Convention Bureau to attract and guide those travelers who are interested in the wine industry. The new wine grape interpretive center located along the freeway next to the Target Shopping Center features Yakima as a gateway to Yakima Valley’s wine grape industry.

Ann’s presentation encourages us all to be Ambassador’s for our community and to look for ways that we can encourage those who we come in contact with to consider Yakima as a destination point for their next vacation, sporting or professional event.

President Barb closed the meeting once again “gavel-less”.
