ROCK THE GAP/KIWANIS FAMILY FESTIVAL A SUCCESS
Chair Extraordinaire LINDA HACKETT announced that the Rock the Gap and Family Festival to benefit special needs playground equipment for MLK School were a success. Those that attended had a great time and enjoyed the tent to get out of the sun. One participant noted that it reminded him of the first year of the Case of the Blues which now draws hundreds and raises big bucks. SPENSER HATTON noted that the first year of Songfest saw 88 in the audience and now it fills the Capitol Theater! Many of our members were involved in the event and Linda thanked a few especially – KIRSTEN STOFFER for the Kiwanis Café and a sympathetic ear, VENETTA MILLER for running the family festival, AMY NEAL for contacting restaurants, BETH KLINGELE for trucks and ice, JOHN BENSON for his great stove, BRIAN BLOUNT for his “we got it covered” attitude, CHRIS CHRISTMAN and SPENSER HATTON for “procuring” a shopping cart. PROGRAM: YMCA YOUTH PROGRAMS
We had three speakers from the YMCA talk to us about youth programs. Andrew Richardson shared with us some of the programs at the YMCA for youth sports and other youth activities including itty bitty soccer and basketball, Youth in Government, Summer Camp, and coming soon Tai Kwon Do and Fencing.
Eric Lee told us about the East Side Sports League that is now in its 9th year. It began one summer day when Eric, carrying only a clip board and a few bats and balls was greeted by about 500 kids from the eastside wanting to sign up to play ball. This program is supported by 100 or more volunteers and has been taken under the YMCA’s wing.
Many of these kids would not be able to play organized sports without this program.
Laura Munson, Youth Outreach Director, then told us about the Rotary ASPIRE program which stands for Adult-Student Program to Inspire, Relate and Enrich. This is a much needed and used Mentor Program for youths mostly kids of single parents and emphasizes goal setting, life skill development and guidance by adult volunteers. This program has a long waiting list of kids and Laura encouraged any Kiwanis that would like to become involved to give her a call.
