MAY 20, 2003
Russ Dix The other Red Lion welcomed our group, although they put us waaaay back in the restaurant.
LINDA HACKETT talked about the upcoming Rock the Gap, May 31. She has assigned everyone involved a time to work, but still needs some more volunteers. She is also hosting a Rock Painting party at her home this Saturday (10 to noon) to ensure we have decorations for the tables. Tickets are available for members to sell. If you are planning to simply purchase your allotment of tickets yourself, please consider donating them back to KIRSTEN STOFFER and she will give them to some of the hard working parents at MLK. We need bodies at the event to make it a success, so please sell your tickets.
VENETTA MILLER also passed around the signup sheet for the Gap2Gap Family Festival. See Venetta if you can spare even a couple of hours during the day on May 31.
Camp Roganuda work day is coming June 7. There are still plenty of jobs to be done, so if you haven’t signed up yet, please do so. There will be many other Kiwanis Clubs joining us this year, so it will be a good time to meet new people as well as get to know our members better.
MARK HAMPTON announced Golf Day, June 24. Check your calendars, talk to your friends, and come prepared to sign up at the next meeting.
AMY NEAL invited us all to a BBQ at her home on July 12. This is a joint Camp Fire thank you and Kiwanis social event. Bring something to throw on the BBQ and prepare to have a fun time.
Our guests Chris Cote and Lynn Buchanon were treated to a great program by Donna Kelly and Principal Luz from Martin Luther King. Both thanked our club for the work we have put in to raise funds for new playground equipment. Principal Luz then showed us a powerpoint that gave a brief presentation on the many activities at MLK. She explained how the WASL scores are rising dramatically at MLK, the school is becoming more family focused by offering many activities at night, and how MLK is a magnet school for the arts. They offer piano and violin lessons as well as drama and dance classes. All this has helped integrate the many students who start at MLK in a Spanish assisted program (58% in the first grade), but end up in regular classes (.05% by the fifth grade).
The best part of the program were the readings by Adrian and Lisette. These two kindergarteners read the Clifford book that all kindergarten students received. Adrian read in English and Lisette in Spanish. There was many a misty eye as they finished. It certainly reinforced the good things that our club can do in the community. Check out the thank you banner and cards they left with us at the next meeting.
