MARCH 18, 2003
Dirk Marler GUESTS
Two honored guests joined us for the March 18 meeting. Becky Scholl and Mary Beth Wright introduced their secretary, Idelparra Gonzales, who became a U.S. citizen just an hour before the meeting. The omnipresent city council member Lynn Buchanan was also on hand.
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SONGFEST
Spencer Hatton reported that last Saturday’s Songfest XV was a great success. The Capitol Theatre was filled to near capacity and revenue was on par with last year. Ten choirs performed at this year’s event.
Special thanks go to Brian Blount and Argus Insurance for underwriting the event. Kiwanis volunteers included Blount, Velma Crawford, John Benson, Jerry Henderson, Doug Cochran, Wendy Aguilar, Cami Leonard, Ron Zirkle, Kirsten Stoffer, Mary Beth Wright and husband Jim Wright, and Pat Danielson.
GARAGE SALE HELP SOUGHT
Spencer also indicated that he will soon send an e-mail to members asking about interest in pursuing the garage sale fundraiser. He needs at least one more person to help put the event together.
He needs a secure area for the sale and for each member to donate ten items.
Hatton helped put together a similar event for his fathers’ group. Six dads raised $2200 with only six or seven hours work. He expects that our club could clear $6-7,000 which is about half what we clear on Bingo.
“It’s a piece of cake,” he assured the members.
Proceeds will help finance special needs playground equipment at Martin Luther King elementary.
REMEMBER CLEAN-UP/GREEN UP
According to Audrey Rice, the annual Clean-up/Green-up event will be April 26. She will circulate a signup sheet at next week’s meeting.
BIG GAP-TO-GAP EVENTS PLANNED ON MAY 31
Linda Hackett described the MLK playground project and some big plans to raise funds for that project.
Linda explained that MLK is the special education school for the Yakima School District. Special education kids cannot play on the current playground equipment, so they just sit and watch the other kids. Our club is working with the school’s parent group to raise money for the equipment.
The playground equipment will be installed on public land so it will be available to all children in the community.
The club will be involved with two fundraising projects centered on the annual Gap-to-Gap event at the Greenway on May 31, 2003.
A daytime family festival will be chaired by Venita Miller. There will be booths staffed largely by MLK parents that will sell snacks such as hot dogs and popcorn and game booths such as dunking booths, hoop shoots, and other family games.
The evening program is tentatively billed as “Rock the Gap.” It will be modeled after the successful “Case of the Blues” event.
Our club will provide planning and volunteers and split any profits with the Greenway. There will be a classic rock band and local beer and wine. A special Designated Driver area will also be designated.
Linda is seeking people who will participate and indicated, “We’re committed.”
A ROGY REMINDER
Amy Neal said the snow is melting at Camp Roganunda and kids are already signing up for this summer’s camp.
The annual Kiwanis Work Day at Roganunda will be Saturday, June 7, 2003. Amy reported that she has had good response from other Kiwanis clubs that may want to team up with us for the project.
BLUE JEANS WAS A SUCCESS
Mary Beth Wright thanked the club on behalf of the Yakima School District for our help with the annual Blue Jeans Basketball Tournament. This year 12 schools and 250 fourth and fifth grade kids participated in the tournament. It is the only experience many of the kids have had with organized sports.
WELCOME, PENNY BAKER!
Penny Baker gave an interesting “classification talk” that described her life’s interests and journeys. More than one member was moved to remark afterward, “Wow! You’re a busy woman!”
SUN KINGS WILL PROVIDE MARCH 25 PROGRAM
Yakima Sun Kings General Manager Rich Austin and other members of the Sun Kings family will provide our March 25 program. The Sun Kings will play in the 2003 CBA Championship game on Monday, March 24. This should be a good program and a good chance to showcase our club for new member prospects.
