PROGRAM: Perry Technical Institute Scholarships
First of all, that was a great lunch….now back to the program.

According to Dr. J. Tuman, president of Perry Technical Institute, our Club and the Kiwanis Trust have given out scholarships to worthy Perry Tech students since 1991. Over 100 students have been helped since that time. Our Kiwanis Trust started out with $500 many years ago and has grown to a high of $1.5million according to Dr. MIKE WILSON, current Trust Board member. The Perry Scholarships are funded by a generous contribution by the Nickeson family and other contributions. The earnings on these funds are used to give out scholarships, usually 10 at $1000 each.

Christine Cote, Perry Tech Foundation Director, thanked us for the support of the school and then introduced several former recipients of our scholarship. The presentations by these former students were at times very emotional. It was clear that the scholarship helped these people out at a time when they needed it most, and allowed each one of them to fulfill there career dreams. Aspirations that may not have been possible without this scholarship.

One particularly touching story came from Maria Najera who graduated from the Electrical program in 1999. She shared with us how her education has helped not only herself, but her children as well. Her three kids have excelled in school because of the importance she places on education having learned first hand how important a good education is.

We also heard from former recipients: Shon McIntyre, telecom instructor at Perry Tech, Nick Camerata, Hanford Engineer, George May, Graphics instructor at Perry, Rob Chandler, now with Future Link in Yakima and others.

2003 Scholarship Recipients are:
Bill Cannon - Industrial Computing/Process Controls
Shane Dolarrhyde – HVAC/Refrigeration
Aaron Eickmeyer- Electrical
Jason Goyne – HVAC/Refrigeration
Porfirio Lionel Hernandez –Computer Graphics
Tristan Kelley- Telecommunications
Heather Paeschke- Graphics
Matthew Pentland – Industrial Computing/Process Controls
Thaddeus Stout - Telecommunications
Alfred White -Electrical

President Barb closed by reminding the scholarship recipients to remember that someone in the community cared enough to help them and hopefully when they get out of school and start their careers they will do the same for others.
