LT. GOVERNOR STEVE EMHOFF reminded us about the District Convention to be held here in Yakima on August 15, 16 and 17.
SERGEANT BRIAN BLOUNT: Since Sergeant to be DAN FISHER was not at the meeting, Brian filled in and added to the Administrative Budget coffers by fining STEVE EMHOFF, RUSS ACKLEY (who turned 75 on Monday), DON DAVIDSON, PAT DANIELSON, RICH LEWIS, CHRIS CHRISTMAN, LYNN SMITH, BARBARA P. AND J BLAKE.
Russ Ackley then called a long game of Bingo that almost had several winners.
PROGRAM: Kirsten Stoffer, Program Chairperson for February, then introduced our speaker, Gary Peterson, the Publicity Chairperson and clarinet player with the Yakima Valley Community Band. Gary shared the history of the band which was formed in 1919 by business men in Yakima. They performed in parades and in parks and had no female members. Later the Yakima City Band and the Yakima Elks Band combined and there were still no women but in 1970 the Elks band disbanded and the Yakima Valley Community Band was formed. Women then joined the Band. They play in City Parks in Yakima during the summer. Randall Park was then selected as the official park and they perform for six weeks on Wednesday nights during July and August.
The purpose is to provide free entertainment and the opportunity for Band members to give back to the community. There are 50-60 members and they participate in the band year around and come from all areas of the community. There are no auditions and it is an all volunteer organization. You just must be able to read and play music. They practice at Ike’s band room for 36 weekly practices and have 18 concerts. The concerts include the Randall Park summer concerts, concerts at the Railroad Park in Toppenish, Selah Park, Applewood Park in Naches and the Harrah Harvest Festival. They have played at many areas across the state and in 1996 went to Switzerland and in 1999, they went to the United Kingdom.
They do some fund raising but most costs are born by the volunteers. There are sponsorship fees of $500 per concert which raises the funds for music. They are hoping to raise funds for a band shell and platform at Randall Park to provide a better performance atmosphere.
Gary then shared his slides of their trip to Switzerland and made most of us ready to travel!
