JANUARY 21, 2003:

Pat Danielson

Another dreary January day but our Club was bright and cheery with another good crowd. We welcomed guests, Penny Baker and Lynn Buchanan. Penny, a guest of CHERI ERGESON, will be joining our club from the Selah club due to a change in employment. Lynn, a Kamiakin Kiwanian, is always welcome. Also joining us was a great Interclub from CleElum, all women.

CHRIS CHRISTMAN would have loved to join that Interclub, but he will have his own going to Ellensburg at noon on January 27 with VENETTA MILLER, AMY NEAL, BETH KLINGELE and DOUG COCHRAN. How did Doug get in on that? By the time you read this we may have had another Interclub at Kamiakin this Thursday with Beth, PRESIDENT BARB, Doug and another volunteer being sought by this month’s Interclub chairperson, Beth.

DAWN ALIVERTI announced that the West Coast Gateway has informed the Club that as of March 1, 2003 there will be a $1.50 meal increase which will bring the cost of the meals to $10.35. There has not been an increase for three years. Dawn, our house committee chair, will be forming a group to advise the Board on what to do about this increase. If you want to help out on the decision, please contact Dawn soon. District dues are rumored to be going up $5.00 and International dues up $15.00.

JERRY HENDERSON was awarded a desk plaque for his years of service to the Aktion Club. Jerry has put in untold hours to this group and much love. He is a great Kiwanian and a great man.

There will be a meeting at 7 a.m. at Argus Insurance on Friday, January 24, to discuss a possible fund raiser for a project at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School (which we have adopted as the President’s Project under the watch of our new members.) WENDY AGUILAR, chairperson of the committee, announced that COSTCO does a readying program at MLK and are checking to see if we can share in their corporate training program. There will also be a McTeachers night at McDonalds for MLK and we are encouraging to go out to eat and support that outing. We will have the date later. McDonalds donates at least $250 to the school or ½ o f the proceeds from the evening of teachers working the restaurant. There also will be a Scholastic Book Drive which we will be assisting.

PROGRAMS: KIRSTEN STOFFER, Program chairperson for February, announced that the programs will be: Feb. 4, President of CWU; Feb 11 Dept of Corrections on Drunk Driving, Feb 18 Yakima Valley Community Band, Feb 25 offsite at the Yakima Valley Museum for a tour and lunch. There will be a signup for the Museum. We will need a head count for that event. Programs are usually listed under Programs on your Bulletin, just a click away.

PRESIDENT BARB also wanted to have you take notice and thank our Bulletin advertisers: Dr. MIKE WILSON, Children’s Miracle Network (LINDA HACKETT) and Superior Asphalt (JOHN BENSON).

Put June 7 on the calendar for Kiwanis Workday at Camp Roganunda!

Sergeant BRIAN BLOUNT increased the administrative funds though “donations” from CAMI, PAM, ROGER, ARCHIE, JOE, DAN, RUTH, BARB, CHERI, DIRK, DON, MAC, MARK, J and even our guest speaker Sheriff Ken Irwin.

J BLAKE also paid to remind us of the Boy Scout Breakfast next week, January 30th, 7 a.m. at the Convention Center. Call J to make arrangements.

PROGRAM – CRIME STOPPERS-Sheriff and West Valley Kiwanian, Ken Irwin, and Mike Balmelli, KAPP-TV, gave us some great information on Crime Stoppers which has been part of the community for almost 13 years. It is a non profit organization that depends solely on donations and offers cash rewards for tips which solve crimes. The rewards are given anonymously through a code at a bank. Be aware that most tips come from X-wives, girl friends and former or current jail mates. Yakima County is 2nd in size in land mass in the state, 8th largest in services for the Sheriff, 5th in serious crimes and 37th in man power or officers per thousand citizens. Crime Stoppers helps in catching the criminals at no cost to the county. Crime Stoppers has raised funds through donations and various fund raisers – Teen Dance, Golf Tournament and are looking to do a family biking event on the Canyon Highway on May 18. The highest rewards paid have been 1991 - $3050; 1994 - $2284 and in 1997 $5650. Rewards average $100. The toll free number to report crimes or criminal whereabouts is 1-800-248-9980 or locally 248-9980.
