JANUARY 14, 2003

Pat Danielson

Another good crowd and maybe 2003 we can have better attendance. That could be everyone’s resolution!

GUESTS: Guests joining us were an interclub from Apple Valley; Kamiakin member Lynn Buchanan and special guest Kelsey Dix, daughter of RUSS.

INTERCLUBS: We had an Interclub to Ellensburg that morning with Interclub leader for the month, BETH KLINGELE, PRESIDENT BARB GRECO, DOUG COCHRAN, AMY NEAL AND PAT DANIELSON. Only a partial Interclub made it to Kamiakin last week and another interclub is planned for Ellensburg noon club on the 27th.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: The planning on the District Convention is going well. The convention is in Yakima August 14-17 (too bad it is the same weekend as the Case of the Blues). It starts at noon on Friday and goes to Sunday morning. There are forums and some great entertainment planned. One thousand people are expected.

June 7 is Kiwanis work day at Camp Roganunda. Put it on your calendar.

Blue Jeans Basketball dates have not been set yet. MARY BETH WRIGHT has taken over for Eric Waidman who has resigned from the club.

STAN PRATT shared a photo from the Rose Bowl parade of the Kiwanis float. He said that there has been a Kiwanis float for almost the entire time of the Rose Parade. He didn’t say much about the game.

SERGEANT: MIKE WILSON did a good job at raising administrative funds. He seems to really enjoy fleecing the crowd in his role as Sergeant.

Additional dollars were paid for bragging – RUSS DIX in his new part time position as the director of the Yakima Winery Association. STAN PRATT is a new grandpa again for the third time – a baby girl. J BLAKE bragged on his scouts getting excellent awards and JOHN BENSON donated a check for $25 – a dollar for each wedding anniversary he and JoAnne are celebrating with a trip to Hawaii.

REMINDER: GENE ROSTVOLD reminded us that the birthday celebration for Martin Luther King, Jr. will be Sunday and Monday with the Capital Theatre on Sunday at 7 p.m. and a march from City Hall to Davis High School at 11:30a.m. on Monday.

The Friends of Scouting Breakfast will be January 30 with Mel Stottlemyer, Sr (sorry about the spelling) as the guest speaker.

BINGO:
STEVE PICKETT decided our Bingo game should be 4 in the corner and made his table play low ball!

CORRECTION: We think the price of the Crab Feed tickets was incorrect last week and the tickets are $20.00 each. I am still waiting for a final confirmation on that.
PROGRAM:

January Program Chair, J BLAKE, introduced one of our favorite programs, Bob Romero General Manager of the Yakima Bears. No one plays his audience better than Bob. He shared that even though last season they had 23 wins and 53 losses they have had a good off season. The Diamondbacks have decided to keep some of the Bears team members for longer periods which should bring more success. The Diamond Backs are committed to the community. They will keep the games affordable for families, continue the BiMart Bears Buck night, give out tickets to various youth groups, and again do the overnight Boy Scout event. They have a great Sponsor base and they are working on the season ticket holders. He reminded us that at least 2 – 3 players on each team each year will end up playing in the big leagues. They do all of this with only four full time employees and then hire 50 on a seasonal basis. There is a new person in charge of ticket sales and will be a new radio guy from California this year. The manager will be Bill Plumber and good coaches are returning. Bob looks for great success this summer.
