Special Bell Ringing Report:
"I just heard from Lisa at Salvation Army on the total of our "take" on Tuesday. It was $1,114.23. Last year it was $708.70. CONGRATULATIONS to all who helped in this very worthwhile activity. It was a surprise to see that much gain over last year. I was hoping for a slight gain but this was really a significant increase!! I will not be at next Tuesday's meeting and co-chair Joe Kennish will make the report. As a committee, we will be evaluating the activity and reporting to the next board meeting. If any one has suggestions, please let me or Joe know what they are.
Don"

It was a meeting of dates to remember.

December 3rd, the day of the meeting, was Bell Ringing Tuesday. Thanks to DON DAVIDSON for his hard work in scheduling and JOE KENNISH of Longs Drug for bringing around coffee and cookies. They really helped warm up a cold day.

December 7th the Sunnyside Kiwanis Club will be cooking pancakes before the Lighted Farm Implement Parade in Sunnyside.

December 9th will be an interclub to West Valley at 7:00 p.m.
December 10th will be an interclub to Selah at 6:30 in the Fire Station. ROGER BELL is coordinating for this month and wants to get them out of the way before too much festivities start.

December10th will also be the YMCA Kids Christmas according to BARBARA POOL. Arrive early and join up with one of the 40 children from the Y. Expect hot dogs or hamburgers and a visit from Santa. Nothing gets you in the spirit like lunch with a kid waiting for Santa.

Santa will be busy that day as he will be stopping by Martin Luther King Elementary, our adopted school, to visit with the 32 special ed kids there. Cookies have been promised and Joe Kennish has graciously donated Polaroid film for a memory photo. If you want to be a part of the fun, be at MLK between 9:00 and 11:30 and let KIRSTEN STOFFER know you will be there.

December 17th is the date for the Kiwanis Family Christmas Party at Englewood Christian Church. There will be no meeting at noon, but members, spouses and children will gather at the church to enjoy delicious food, great fellowship, and a visit from Santa for those 12 and under. Please let AMY NEAL know how many of your family will be attending. Remember, if you sign up, you will be charged whether you attend or not.

Meeting specifics: BARBARA POOL and RICH LEWIS greeted us all as we arrived. AMY NEAL was the invocator. JULIUS GLOVER led us in song, both America and Oh Canada. RICH WOODRUFF introduced our only guest, Lynn Buchanon. ROGER BELL called the fastest game of bingo ever. DIRK MARLER did a stellar job as fill in sergeant.

J. BLAKE had the enviable job of introducing two programs.

BARBARA POOL was the lead off speaker. She told us all about her life, from a farm in New York, to Kennewick when she was 8, to our neck of the woods before her graduation from East Valley High School. She is a Central graduate and took a roundabout path to her current job a LeMaster and Daniels. She married her husband, Doug, in 1996 and got a new job, car, dog, house, and husband in a five month period. Her current family consists of Doug and two dogs, Soffe and Ziggy. She has lots of experience with Santa as her husband has his own suit and plays Santa for family and friends every year. Welcome Barbara, now a full fledged member of our club.

Major Ken Dove was the featured speaker on this Bell Ringing day. He challenged us to find "The Magic in Christmas" telling us a couple of stories to really drive home what he meant. His very personal association with the Salvation Army goes back to his childhood when an officer appeared at his family’s doorstep to save Christmas for he and his three siblings. He carries on that tradition every year with the help of countless people who man the 28 kettles throughout the Yakima area. Bell Ringing is hoping to bring in $85,000 this year and, when combined with other programs like: the Angel Trees, Adopt-a-Family, Project 300 Child Shopping Spree, and Coats for Kids distribution, will provide a Christmas for approximately 1,000 who would not otherwise have one.
