AL BROWN REPORTS ON THE GREENWAY
Al Brown, Executive Director of the Greenway Foundation, provided an overview of the Greenway’s history and some future plans.
Brown pointed out that Sarge Hubbard Park is actually built on the site of one of the original city dumps. The Greenway now covers ten miles and is referred to as the “Jewel of Yakima.”
The Greenway Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that receives no government subsidies. The Foundation boasts about 1260 members, including individuals and corporations. One of the best fundraisers is the Case of the Blues festival that lost $8000 in its first year and will probably net around $120-130,000 this year.
The Foundation also is building an endowment to finance park maintenance. The goal is to raise $10 million and use the interest for regular maintenance.
The organization is considering extending the path along the rail line to Naches. There will also be a bike path on the new SR 24 bridge that will provide direct access to the east side of the river.
