JULY 23, 2002
Russ Dix It turned out to be a meeting of fill-ins as nobody seemed to be able to get out of the office in the heat.
AUDREY RICE was a substitute invocator, DOUG COCHRAN again stepped in as sergeant, ROGER BELL filled out the Cle Elum interclub Wednesday (replacing BARB GRECO who couldn\'t break away from her new job) and guest Jerry Baldoz filled in for our Senior Services Chairperson in getting interest for the Pioneer Picnic.
Jerry was really on hand to receive a check for $500 in support of the August 21st Pioneer Picnic, scheduled for the Ahtanum Youth Park. Every year, volunteers serve lunch to between 600 and 750 seniors. The various Kiwanis Clubs have always supplied the labor to get all those meals served within 15 minutes. For the past couple of years, we have also helped support the Picnic financially, hnce the $500 check. Jerry invited everyone to mark their calendars for the 21st. Come and eat first at 11:30 and then work an hour or so.
JACK GILBERT again had the Vintiques Bingo sign up sheet circulating. That is next week end. Contact Jack for times available.
RUSS DIX introduced guests yet again, as he still has not brought someone in order to relinquish the rat/gator. Lynn Buchanon joined us and STEVE EMHOFF again accompanied Pam, but made her pay for herself this time.
RON ZIRKLE called a game of Bingo - which HE WON. He kept going, however, because, as SPENCER HATTON pointed out, he wants votes.
The first official announcement was made of the upcoming By-Law vote. This will be to reduce the number of Board Members from the current 12 to 8. This is in light of the drop in club membership and the difficulty in finding members eligible to fill vacant position. The vote will occur in two weeks.
The August 6th meeting, the one for the By-Law vote, will be held across the street at the other Cavanuagh\'s.
As KIRSTEN STOFFER came up to introduce the speakers, this lame scribe had to leave for another appointment. Kirsten supplied the following recap of the speakers - done by e-mail, so I didn\'t even have to retype anything. Many, many thanks Kirsten.
Lisa Pooler & Tatiana Karpilovich from Yakima Children of Chernobyl. The Children of Chernobyl, U.S. Alliance (CofCUSA) is a humanitarian, tax exempt corporation that is dedicated to helping the children and their families affected by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident. They do this by: establishing and maintaining contact with individuals and organizations in the contaminated regions, providing support services to the many grassroots community groups who provide health recuperation respites for the Chernobyl children in the United States each summer; obtaining medical, dental supplies and humanitarian aid to the affected areas; increasing public awareness of the issues.
The summer program is in progress in Yakima so we are fortunate to have Tatiana Karpilovich accompanying Lisa. Tatiana is a Linguistics Professor at the University in Misk. She takes time from her personal life in our summer months to serve as an interpreter and program hostess here in Yakima. This is Tatianas 7th summer traveling with the children to Yakima. Lisa Pooler hosted a child in the programs second year in 1997. She then hosted that child, Katya, along with her brother Sergei in 1998 and 1999.
